Westminster, MD - The McDaniel Green Terror scored 12 times in the third inning before cruising to a 16-7 victory. The Falcons didn't get their bats going until late, scoring four in the eighth and two in the ninth, but it was too little too late as the Falcons dropped their third straight game.
For the majority of Wednesday's contest the Falcons kept McDaniel's bats in check. However one big inning for the Green Terror would break the game open and McDaniel would take control.
After the Green Terror and Falcons traded zeros in the first two innings, the Green Terror exploded for 12 runs in the bottom half of the third. While the Falcons allowed only six hits in the frame, McDaniel took advantage of two errors, two walks and two hit batsmen to take a commanding lead.
The 12-run inning is the most runs allowed by a Falcons team in a single inning since
Lebanon Valley scored 14 runs in the third inning of a 30-14 victory over the Falcons on Apr. 5, 2013.
After McDaniel's big inning the Falcon's pitchers settled down, allowing just six hits and four runs across the final five frames. In the game, the four Falcons pitchers awarded 11 free passes, the most for Messiah in a single game this season, against five strikeouts.
Despite trailing by double-digits, the Falcons did not go down without a fight. In the fifth, the Falcons strung together a walk and two base hits to load the bases with one out, but a strike out and a popup ended the threat and left the Falcons scoreless.
Just an inning later, Messiah pushed across their first run of the game on a fielder's choice. In the eighth the Falcons added four runs to pull within eight. The four-run inning was highlighted by an RBI double by
Kyle Schoen and an RBI single from
Jon Heisey.
McDaniel got the majority of those runs right back with a three-run bottom of the eighth.
In the ninth,
Joseph Saufley single home
Ben Sollenberger and
Colin Fry doubled home Saufley to plate the Falcons sixth and seventh runs of the afternoon. In the end it was not enough as McDaniel came away with the 16-7 victory.
Falcons' starter
Brandon Shirk took the loss completing 2 1/3 innings while allowing seven runs on two hits and four walks.
Josh Good had the only multi-hit game for the Falcons going 2-4 with a double and a run scored.
With the loss the Falcons fall to 3-7 overall (3-3 in conference), while McDaniel improves to 6-5.
The Falcons will take the field again on Thursday afternoon when they host the Muhlenberg Mules in their home opener. First pitch is scheduled for 3:30 p.m.
