Glenside, PA -
Steven Ridings threw a complete game on Friday, allowing just five hits over eight innings. Unfortunately for the Falcons, Ridings took the loss as the Falcons fell 3-2 to the Knights.
Messiah allowed two runs in the second inning and another run in the fifth before rallying in the sixth and seventh. RBI doubles from
Kyle Schoen (sixth inning) and
Zach Brubaker (seventh inning) brought the Falcons to within one. With runners in scoring position in the sixth the Falcons could not push across the tying run and went down quietly in the eighth and ninth before falling by a final of 3-2.
Â
Jon Mullin led off the game with a single to left field but the very next Falcons' batter lined a ball to the Knights' shortstop who snagged the line drive and doubled Mullin off of first – for the first of four double plays that the Falcons hit into on the afternoon.
Â
In the bottom of the first Ridings struck out the side, but the inning was not without stress. A walk, a single, and an error loaded the bases before Ridings collected the final strikeout of the inning, leaving the sacks full of Knights.
Â
After the Falcons went down quietly in the top half of the second, the Knights struck in the bottom half of the frame. A hit by pitch and a single through the right side put runners on first and third with no outs. An errant throw by Mullin, the Falcons' backstop, allowed the first run to score before a single to right scored the second. Ridings however limited the damage forcing a groundball double play and a ground out to end the frame.
Â
Messiah base runners in the third and fourth were taken out by double plays before Arcadia added to their lead in the fifth. A leadoff double put a runner in scoring position, and a one-out single drove in the Knights' third run of the day.
Â
In the top of the sixth the Falcons got on the board. After the Falcons got their leadoff man on to start the sixth by way of a hit by pitch, he was immediately erased on a five-four-three double play. With the bases empty,
Joseph Saufley became the second hit batsmen of the inning and came home on a two-out double by
Kyle Schoen to right center field.
Â
The Knights went down in order in the sixth before the Falcons closed the gap in the top of the seventh.
Jon Heisey walked with one-out and advanced to second on a groundout. For the second straight inning the Falcons used a two-out double to right center to bring in a run, in the seventh it was
Zach Brubaker with the big hit.
Â
With Brubaker at second,
Jon Mullin collected and infield single that put runners on the corners. Mullin then stole second putting two runners in scoring position, but the Falcons could not bring them home as a strikeout ended the threat.
Â
Messiah went down in order in the eighth and ninth and fell by a final score of 3-2.
Â
As mentioned
Steven Ridings was handed the loss despite pitching a complete game and allowing three runs on five hits. Ridings also walked two batters and hit two batters while striking out a season-high eight.
Â
Messiah and Arcadia will meet again tomorrow afternoon when the Knights travel to Grantham to finish the three game series with a double-header, first pitch is scheduled for 12:00 p.m.
