Grantham, PA - The Falcons of Messiah College lost to the Bullets of Gettysburg College 18-7 on a gloomy day at Starry Athletic Complex. Messiah trailed 4-2 at half before the Bullets rallied and widened the score for the victory.
The Falcons came to play in the first quarter with a goal from
Justin Bradley five minutes into the game. Bradley used a nice dodge to knock the Gettysburg defender off of his feet and ripped a shot into the back of the net for the goal.
Trailing 1-0, the Bullets responded with a goal of their own with a bounce shot from Paul Werner. With the score knotted up at one,
Tyler Goglio circled behind the cage and found an open
Drew Pagenkopf who finished for the score.
Gettysburg responded with a flashy behind the back goal from Jack Harvazinski and tied the game at two to end the first quarter. Harvazinski received a check from a Falcon defender and was falling to the ground when he completed the behind the back finish.
The second quarter didn't see a lot of scoring from either team. The quarter witnessed its first goal ten minutes in with a goal from Gettysburg's Patric Decker.
The Bullets came up with another significant goal with 0:57 left in the quarter from Robby Maddux. The score gave the Bullets a 4-2 lead heading into halftime.
This game was truly a tale of two halves as the Bullets scored ten unanswered goals to start the half. The 10 goal streak saw scores from Robby Maddux (5), Samuel Woodcock, Jameson Smith, Sean Fumai, and Brendan Morris. The Falcons were held scoreless during the third quarter and trailed 14-2 heading into the fourth quarter.
Messiah was down, but they wouldn't finish the game without putting up a fight. The Falcons started the fourth quarter with three unanswered goals from
Andrew Harris and
Blake Knobloch (2).
Tyler Goglio found the back of the net two more times for the Falcons during the quarter and outscored the Bullets 5-4. However, the deficit was too large to overcome and the Falcons fell 18-7.
Statistically, the Falcons trailed in shots (47-26), turnovers (21-15), and ground balls (38-30). Messiah did win the face off battle with 15 wins and 14 losses.
The loss dropped Messiah to 1-2 overall, and still 0-1 in the Commonwealth. The Falcons will next play on Saturday when they travel to No. 6 York College at 3:00 p.m.
