Grantham, PA - The Messiah College Falcons picked up two solid wins over Elizabethtown College (7-13) Friday, bringing their overall record to 18-7.
The hits came in bunches in Game One as the Falcons posted five runs in the second and three in the fourth before claiming the 9-0 win in just five innings.
Game Two provided plenty of excitement as both
Amanda Jones and
Becky Notte picked up their second homeruns of the season. Notte's dinger came in the bottom of the seventh, claiming the walkoff victory with a score of 4-3.
Game OneIn the first game of the non-conference doubleheader, the Falcons out hit the Blue Jays 9-1, en route to the 9-0 win. Messiah claimed the mercy rule victory by posting five runs in the second and three in the fourth, putting the game out-of-reach early on.
Courtney Allen led the offensive charge with four RBI. She went 2-3 with a double and one run scored.
The Falcons got on the board early, scoring a single run in the first inning. They added to their lead in the second, converting four hits into five runs.
Amanda Jones's leadoff double kickstarted the offense in the second and was followed by a single from
Nicole Blantz. In the next at-bat
Katie Tankred was hit by an inside pitch, loading the bases for the Falcons. Aggressive baserunning and an infield single from
Emily Quatrale plated the Falcons' first run of the inning.
Amber Bingaman followed with a walk for another Messiah score. With the 3-0 lead,
Carrie Fix and Allen each singled to bring in the final three runs of the inning.
Claressa Mees (9-3) was on her game versus the Blue Jays, allowing just one hit against two walks and two strikeouts.
The Falcons put the game away in the fourth when Bingaman and
Brooke Pompeo each singled before Allen came through with a two-out, two-run single for the 8-0 advantage. The Blue Jays gave up the final run of the inning on an error that allowed Allen to score.
Allen took the mound in the top of the fifth to close things out. She retired three of four batters faced, sealing the victory for both the Falcons and Mees.
Game TwoThe second game of the twin bill proved to be the polar opposite of Game One. This time the Blue Jays scored first, took the early lead, and outhit the Falcons 7-6.
Elizabethtown strung together three hits and plated a single run in the top of the first to take the early advantage. They added two more runs in the second on two hits and a Messiah error, extending their lead to 3-0.
The Falcons chipped away at their deficit in the bottom of the second, adding a single run. Despite the momentary momentum shift, the Falcons were brought to a screeching halt when
Brooke Pompeo fouled a ball off of her leg and had to leave the game.
Without Pompeo in the lineup, the defensive side took on a different look for the Falcons. Starting pitcher,
Carrie Fix, took Pompeo's spot at third, Allen took over in the pitcher's circle, Bingaman moved from leftfield to centerfield and
Tina Lehman replaced her in right.
With the changes and concern for their fallen teammate, the Falcons fought back with even greater vigor than before.
Amanda Jones initiated the comeback in the next inning when she drove a solo homerun over the fence in left-center. Jones played an integral part in the fifth, too, when she placed an impromptu bunt between the pitcher and third that allowed Allen to score on the non-play; knotting the score at 3-3.
After a scoreless sixth, the Blue Jays were on the cusp of scoring in the top of the seventh but the Falcons held firm. With runners on second and third and only one out, Allen forced a ground out for the second out. In the next at-bat, Allen then snagged a bullet that one-hopped right in front of her and casually threw to first for the final out.
In five innings of work, Allen (3-0) allowed two hits against one walk and one strikeout.
On the offensive end, Allen had the opportunity to help herself going into the bottom of the seventh as the leadoff hitter. Unfortunately for the Falcons Allen was super aggressive, but just couldn't connect, and went down on strikes for the first out.
Becky Notte was up for the challenge, though.
Notte ended the game with just one swing when she drove the ball to deep center and well over the fence for the walkoff homerun; claiming the 4-3 victory.
With the wins, the Falcons move to 18-7 overall and a perfect 5-0 at home. They will look to extend their winning streak on Saturday when they host Hood College. The Commonwealth Conference doubleheader is set to begin at 1:00 p.m.
