Allen and Fix Lead Falcons Over Alvernia

Reading, PA - Messiah College (24-7, 10-0) picked up two Commonwealth Conference wins Thursday over Alvernia University (13-11, 5-7).

The Falcons overcame a 2-0 deficit in Game One, scoring two runs in the sixth and then three in the seventh for the come-from-behind victory. Courtney Allen led the late offensive charge with two RBI.

Carrie Fix homered in the second inning of Game Two, driving in three of six Messiah runs in the frame. The Falcons added insurance runs in both the third (3) and seventh (1) en route to the 10-3 win.

Claressa Mees went the distance in Game One, picking up her 12th win of the season. She held the Crusaders to two runs (one earned) on six hits against four strikeouts and five walks. Courtney Allen (5-0) earned the win in the night cap, holding Alvernia to three runs on five hits. She struckout four and walked four.

Game One

Despite the fact that both teams had runners on base through the first few innings of play, neither managed to push a run across the plate. In the bottom of the fifth, however, the Falcons committed two errors that led to two runs for the Crusaders.

Messiah took no time to recover, pulling even in the next half inning. Amanda Jones reached on an Alvernia error to lead off the inning then was driven home on a double from Courtney Allen. Allen later scored on a groundout by Katie Tankred.

The Falcons put the game away in the top of the seventh, scoring three runs on four hits and two Crusader errors. Allen became the sole RBI-getter of the inning when she singled, driving in Becky Notte. The two other runs were a result of aggressive baserunning and miscues by Alvernia.

Six different Falcons collected hits in the game with multiple tallies coming from Fix (3), Allen (2), and Nicole Blantz (3). Katie Tankred was credited with a single RBI, while Allen drove in two RBI.

Game Two

The Falcons scored six runs in the top of the second to take a commanding lead in the early stages of Game Two.

Their first run came after Allen singled then made her way around the bases on a throwing error by Alvernia's pitcher. In the process, Blantz found herself on second and was later driven in by Alyssa Herr for the 2-0 lead.

Messiah's breakout occurred moments later when Fix homered, driving in three more runs and forcing the Crusaders to make a pitching change. The change didn't effect the Falcons, though, as both Amanda Jones and Brooke Pompeo picked up hits before the final out of the inning. Jones' RBI triple rounded out the scoring, giving Messiah the 6-0 advantage.

The Falcons extended their lead in the next frame, adding three more runs to take the 9-0 lead. RBI doubles from Tankred (2) and Fix (1) contributed to Messiah's offensive productivity.

Alvernia bounced back in the bottom of the fifth, scoring three runs on four hits; yet their deficit was too great to overcome.

The final run (unearned) for the Falcons came in the top of the seventh when Allen reached on an error then eventually scored on a wild pitch.

With the wins Messiah moves to 10-0 in Commonwealth Conference play and 24-7 overall. They will look to extend their unblemished record on Saturday when they face off with Stevenson University. The double header will be played in Owings Mills, Maryland and begins at 1:00 p.m.
