Grantham, PA - No. 16 Messiah College scored the game's first eight goals and never looked back as they dominated visiting Widener in an 18-5 win. Four different Falcons tallied at least three times, and 12 different players collected at least one point in the win.
Messiah moved to 10-4 overall with the win, and they remained undefeated in the Commonwealth at 6-0. Hood fell to 3-3 in the conference, and dipped below .500 at 6-7 overall.
Â
The Falcons got the scoring underway after just 14 seconds, as
Claire Stikeleather took a feed from
Madi Brunk for a shot on top of the crease. The goal came after
Stephanie Athens reeled in the first of her team-high three draw controls, and the early goal was a sign of things to come.
Â
Stikeleather made it 2-0 at the 25:02 mark, and then Messiah scored six more times before the first period was even halfway completed. Six of those first eight goals were assisted, demonstration of the Falcons' dynamic team attack.
Â
Widener's Jamie Parent ended the shutout with a goal in the 22nd minute, but that was the closest the Pride would get all afternoon. Messiah started the second-half with two quick scores, and soon they were up 13-2 on back-to-back goals from
Jenna Stover.
Â
The Falcons truly dominated the game and were quicker to loose balls, exemplified by later goals by both
Ida Ehrhardt and Athens. On each occasion, a groundball was loose near the cage where each player beat the defense for a shot and score.
Â
At the end, Messiah finished with a 44-13 advantage in shots, and a 16-8 advantage in clears.
Alexa Dipeso even managed eight saves, answering the call even when Widener managed to get in for scoring opportunities.
Â
Carly Bajus,
Liz Brennan, Stikeleather, and Bajus each finished with three goals, with Bajus adding two assists. Stover finished with her two goals, while four others each tallied once.
Â
As mentioned, Messiah moved to 6-0 in the conference. They will next play on Tuesday, Apr. 21 when they host Alvernia University at 4:00 p.m.
