Carlisle, PA - Dickinson College scored 11 runs in their final three at-bats to turn a close game into a lopsided 14-3 win. The late runs helped Dickinson overcome six errors, tied for their most in a single game this season.
The pitchers for both teams combined to hit 10 batters, and Messiah pitchers allowed 14 hits and six walks.
The Red Devils jumped on the board in the bottom of the first. After a leadoff hit by pitch and a stole base, the second Red Devil hitter brought home their first run with a single to center field.
Derek Drake helped to limit the damage as he ended the inning by throwing out a runner at the plate.
The Falcons got that run back in the third inning when they took advantage of three Red Devil errors to plate three runs.
Joseph Saufley collected the only RBI of the inning on a double, the other two runs came across on Dickinson errors.
In the bottom of the fourth the Red Devils rallied to tie the score at three. A sacrifice fly and a double down the right field line brought home the two runs.
The Falcons collected only one hit from the fourth inning on but they did had seven runners on the base paths, mostly thanks to hit by pitches and errors.
In the bottom of the sixth the Red Devils began to open the game up. They used a hit by pitch and two walks to load the bases before Phil Werner doubled to left center to clear the pads. Werner would score later in the inning on a Messiah error.
While Dickinson was leading by four they added on in the bottom of the seventh. They pushed their lead to 12-3 on a two-run double to center, a two-run triple to right center and a sacrifice fly.
The Red Devils weren't done yet, in the bottom of the eighth they tacked on two more runs on an RBI single and a sacrifice fly to get to the final score of 14-3.
With the game firmly in hand, both teams emptied their benches. By the end of the game each team had used 21 different players.
With the loss the Falcons regular season comes to an end. The Falcons finish the season 17-18 overall but with a 13-8 record in the Commonwealth Conference. While the regular season has come to a close, the Falcons' postseason play is just about ready to get under way. On Thursday Messiah will travel to York, Pa. to take on the Stevenson Mustangs in the first round of the Commonwealth Tournament.
