Rowe's Second-Half Goal Stands Up in 1-0 Win

York, PA – Danny Rowe's tally in the 51st minute was all Messiah needed to earn a hard-fought 1-0 win over York College on Tuesday afternoon.

The decision pushed Messiah to 4-2-1 on the season, while York fell to 2-4-1.

The Falcons came out earning the territory battle, but Spartan keeper Charlie Johnson proved up to the challenge with some great work around the net early. He made a terrific save on a half-volley shot by Jacob Bender in the 15th minute and he made four saves overall in the first-half.

Messiah keeper Jonathan Weaver made four saves of his own in the first-half, the last two of which coming in a two-minute span midway through the frame as York was settling in.

After the break Messiah found a great chance to score against the run of play and they didn't miss it. Will Cochran collected the assist after he pushed toward the right post and chipped over Johnson and the York defense to the left side. There, Rowe ran through the ball for his team-leading fifth goal of the season.

York nearly found the equalizer on two different occasions, the first coming in the 62nd minute. Nigel Robinson got behind the Messiah defense for a hard strike from outside the 18, but Weaver leaped just high enough to tip the shot over the cross bar.

In the 78th minute York also nearly tied it, this time with three shots in a few seconds. Playing off a short cross from the right side, both Alexander Rebich and Brendan Saberton each had shots blocked on the six-yard line. Saberton's rebound came back to him, but his second attempt from close range was grabbed by Weaver on the goal line.

In the final seconds Messiah nearly added a second goal, but Johnson made another terrific save to keep Cochran from putting through a shot from left post.

Weaver finished with a career-high nine saves in the winning effort, and the shutout was his fifth of the season.

The Falcons will look to make it two in a row this Saturday when they host Misericordia University at 7:00 p.m.
