Grantham, PA - The Messiah women's basketball team used a 19-0 run in the middle of the second-quarter to break open a tie game before cruising to an 86-63 victory over the visiting Widener Pride on Saturday afternoon.
Three different Falcons scored 15-plus points in a balanced effort as they put together their best offensive performance of the season.
The Falcons posted several season-high marks in the game, scoring 86 total points by shooting 49.2% (31-63) from the field and adding 25 helpers.
Kaitlyn Hoff and
Gillian Glackin each scored 16 points while
Dominique Seamon added 15 points to lead the Falcons.
Alecia Rohrer picked up her fifth double-double of the season with 11 points and 10 rebounds.
The Falcons started strong, leading by as many as eight in the first quarter until the Pride's Julia Venturelli and Nikki Sutliff each hit from behind the arc to chip away at the Falcons' lead and pull within one point. Â
The Falcons' misfortune continued as they came up empty in their first three possessions of the second quarter, resulting in a 21-21 tie.
The draw incited the Falcons, however, as they went on to post 19 unanswered points and pull ahead 40-21 with just 2:50 left in the first half.
Five different players contributed to the 6:30 scoring surge as Seamon (2), Hoff (1), and
Hannah Brown (1) each dropped in triples. On the day, the Falcons scored a season-high 10 three-pointers.
With a healthy 17-point (43-26) lead going into the second half, the Falcons showed no signs of letting up. They quickly increased their lead to 26 by outscoring the Pride 17-9 at the midway point of the third quarter.
The Falcons' largest lead of the game (29 points) came on a three from
Jen Fairbanks that increased the score to 78-49 with 6:01 left to play.Â
Despite begin outscored 14-8 in the final minutes, the Falcons never took their foot off of the accelerator. Their aggressive defense, strong counter attack, and sharp shooting led to a dominant victory against a tough opponent.
On the day, the Falcons shot 55.6% (10-18) from three, 66.7% (14-21) from the free throw line, and 49.2% (31.63) from the field.
With the victory, the Falcons extend their win streak to eight games and move to 6-1 in the MAC Commonwealth. The Pride drops below .500 in the Conference at 3-4 and hold an overall record of 10-6.
The Falcons hit the road for the next five games before returning to Brubaker Auditorium on February 10. Their next contest will be against Lebanon Valley College on Wednesday at 6:00 p.m.
