Grantham, PA - Messiah College held Lycoming College to just 31 points in a lopsided MAC Commonwealth victory on Wednesday night.
Alecia Rohrer led Falcons with 11 points and seven rebounds, while four other Falcons tallied at least seven points in a balanced effort.
The win pushed Messiah's win streak to five games, it also gave them a 3-1 mark in the conference. Lycoming fell to 3-2 in league play.
The Falcons' big win was aided by both a great defensive effort and a strong offensive showing, both of which were evident from start to finish. Messiah took a 16-5 lead at the end of the first quarter, and they allowed just five total made field goals to Lycoming in the game's first 20 minutes. Meanwhile, the Falcons' offense was clicking thanks to strong ball movement and a balanced attack. A contested bucket by
Kaitlyn Hoff in transition put the hosts up 8-3, and soon after Rohrer got her first bucket that made it 10-3. After a rare score by the Warriors,
Jen Fairbanks scored four-straight points to make it 14-5 and, with the last possession of the frame, Messiah executed to find Rohrer in the post for a buzzer-beating layup off the backboard that put Messiah up 16-5.
In the second quarter Messiah continued to wear down Lycoming as they scored 12 of the next 15 points to go up 29-8.
Hannah Brown scored seven of her nine points in that stretch as she and Rohrer were on their way to combining for 16 points in the first half. The Falcons led by as many as 21 points in the second quarter, including the 36-15 halftime score.
Messiah's only stretch of sloppy play came in the first few minutes of the third quarter when, after turning the ball over just twice in the first 20 minutes, they turned it over six times in their first eight possessions. Lycoming took advantage to draw to within 38-24 with 6:00 to play, but Messiah rallied to score six-straight points to again go up 20 points. With seconds to play in the frame
Maci Thornton found
Kaitlyn Hoff for a driving score to give Messiah a 50-28 lead going into the fourth quarter.
In the final frame Messiah continued to push their lead upward, and they finished with a 34-point win. The victory also marked Messiah's best defensive output since holding Arcadia University to just 27 points on Jan. 14, 2009.
Lycoming finished just 8-51 (15.7%) from the field, with Shelby Mueller lead the way with 10 points.
Messiah went 25-64 (39.1%) from the field, and an impressive 14-17 (82.4%) from the free-throw line. Rohrer was the lone Falcon in double-figures with Brown (9), Glackin (9), Hoff (8), and Chavous (7) each tallying at least seven points. Glackin also grabbed five rebounds and collected five blocks while Hoff and Thornton each had four assists. The Falcons finished with an incredible 35-2 edge in bench points.
Messiah will next play on Saturday, Jan. 9 when they host No. 14 Albright College at 3:00 p.m.
