Messiah Picks Apart Pride in Road Shutout

Chester, PA - Messiah College collected five goals from five different players and they outshot Widener University 24-3 in a 5-0 win on Saturday afternoon. Moriah Pfautz and Kristin Donohue each tallied multiple points in the winning effort to help the Falcons move to 8-1 overall and 2-0 in the MAC Commonwealth.

The Falcons, who were recently ranked No. 1 in the NFHCA Top 20 poll, were aggressive from the start and earned three penalty corners and four shots in the first 12 minutes alone. The third of those four shots hit the post, but an immediate pass off the rebound from Donohue wen to Pfautz who sent it into the cage for a 1-0 lead. Less than five minutes later Messiah doubled their lead off a corner set, with Nicole Wilkerson setting up Donohue for the score.

Messiah rode that 2-0 lead all the way to halftime, even as they attempted eight corners and 10 total shots. Nevertheless, the early hold on possession and territory was a sign of things to come as the Falcons scored twice more in the first seven minutes of the second-half. Carissa Gehman got in on the action first, scoring off a feed from Pfautz in the 37th minute of play to make it 3-0. Then, in the 42nd minute Taylor Holt made it 4-0 when she received a pass from Donohue and put it past Widener goalie Mikayla Ninos.

Taylor Wiederrecht finished the scoring for the visitors with less than seven minutes to play when she tipped through a pass from Karalyn Schmidt. Messiah collected two more shots in the remaining minutes and finished with the aforementioned 24-3 edge in shots, including a 19-1 advantage in shots on goal.

Shelby Landes was forced to make a single save in an otherwise dominant performance by the Falcons' defense, while Ninos collected a season-high 12 saves of her own.

The Falcons will next play when they travel to Gettysburg College on Wednesday, Oct. 5. Game time is scheduled for 4:00 p.m.
