Sunny Night at Shoemaker, Falcons Win Big Over Lycoming

Grantham, PA – No. 12 Messiah College scored nine goals and held Lycoming to just two shots in a 9-0 win on Shoemaker Field. Sunny Gelnovatch tallied three times for the Falcons and Marisa Weaver added two goals of her own to lead the attack.

The win moved No. 12 Messiah to 10-2 on the season, including 3-0 in the MAC Commonwealth. Lycoming fell to 6-7-2 overall and 0-4 in the conference. The win was also number 350 for head coach Scott Frey as his career mark moved to 350-19-20 (.925).

Messiah got on the board in the third minute when Gelnovatch toe-poked a shot just off the goal line. Kayla Deckert collected the assist thanks to her initial header that was saved by Joelle Winey. The score for Gelnovatch was also the second-straight goal for the team dating back to her game-winner at McDaniel on Saturday. She made it three-straight 10 minutes later a deflection came to her 10 yards out and she headed all the way through.

With Messiah firmly in control and holding possession in their half, Erin Sollenberger made it 3-0 at the 15:00 mark. The score was off a terrific redirection at the left post after Marisa Weaver gave a hard serve from the left side of the box.

Messiah went into the half up 4-0 thanks to a goal from Julia Kyne in the 35th minute; playing off a combination from Courtney Wagner and Emily Lockwood, Kyne put through a hard strike from just inside the 18 that tucked inside the right corner of the goal.

In the second-half Marisa Weaver tallied two quick goals, the first coming just 21 seconds after the whistle. Less than eight minutes later she took a feed from DJ Cole on the right side, turned middle, and fired a shot inside the far post.

The Falcons scored three more times in second-half, including Lockwood's first goal of the season and Gelnovatch's third goal of the night. Ellie Lengacher finished the scoring in the 74th minute with brilliant flick at the six-yard line off a serve from Sara Strachan.

As mentioned, Messiah held the Warriors to just two shots while they launched 34 of their own. They also earned nine corners to the Warriors' zero.

Messiah will next play this Saturday when they host Albright College at 3:00 p.m. The game will be part of Messiah's Homecoming Day festivities.
