Selingsgrove, PA - The Messiah women's volleyball team fell to Susquehanna University 3-1 (17-25, 15-25, 25-21, 19-25) in their final match of the afternoon.
Braedyn Gallagher led the team with 13 kills and Taylo Hook added eight of her own.
Emily Zellers had 17 digs while
Jessica Zellers recorded 14 of her own.
Brooke Gallagher finished with 36 assists. The Falcons fall to 18-4 on the season but will be back in action next Wednesday night at home in Brubaker Auditorium to take on the Pride of Widener University. Game time is slated for 7:00 p.m.
Match One: Messiah 3, SUNY Canton 0 (25-13, 25-18, 25-12)
The Messiah women's volleyball team swept SUNY Canton (25-13, 25-18, 25-12) in their first match of the day.
Jane Underman let the team with 11 kills while
Kristen Douglas finished with 10. Defensively the Falcons were solid,
Danielle Weaver had 12 digs,
Emily Zellers had 13, and Jessia Zellers recorded 10 of her own.
Brooke Gallagher dished out 18 assists and
Jennifer Rusling finished with 16 assists in the win.
The Falcons started the day strong and in the first set tallying more kills (17-6), had a higher attack percentage (.271-.024), and committed less errors (4-5) than the Kangaroos.
Messiah jumped to an early 6-1 lead off three kills by
Mary Underman, two from
Jane Underman, and a service ace by
Jennifer Rusling. Later leading 8-5 they tallied five-straight points to extend the lead 13-5. In that scoring run
Kristen Douglas had two kills while
Taylor Hook and
Brooke Gallagher each added one.
Soon after the Falcons put together another scoring run, with the score 13-6 they scored four unanswered points off two Kangaroo errors, and kills by Douglas and
Jane Underman giving them the double digit lead 17-6.
Holding a comfortable 18-8 advantage kills by
Mary Underman and
Jane Underman, a service ace by Rusling, and a SUNY Canton error extended their lead 22-8. The Kangaroos responded with four-straight points but the Falcons held tight. With the score 24-13 a final kill from
Kristen Douglas gave Messiah the first set win 25-13.
Messiah didn't play as solid in the second set like the first one but still came out on top winning 25-18.
Down early 4-2 the Falcons scored three-straight points off a kill by
Hannah Baumer, a service ace from
Emily Zellers, and Kangaroo error to jump ahead 5-4. Later with the score knotted at six Messiah utilized a six-point scoring run to go up 12-6. In that scoring run
Danielle Weaver tallied three consecutive service aces while
Taylor Hook,
Brooke Gallagher, and
Jane Underman all hammered down kills.
Later with Messiah leading 20-14, three SUNY Canton errors and a kill from
Kristen Douglas widened the gap giving Messiah a 24-14 advantage. The Kangaroos answered with four-straight points but on the next play committed an error giving Messiah the set two victory.
Messiah finished strong in the third and final set finishing with 14 kills, a .344 attack percentage, and committed just three errors.
Points were traded back-and-forth early and with the score tied at three Messiah tallied three-straight points off a kill from
Taylor Hook, a service ace by
Jessica Zellers, and a SUNY Canton error to give them the 6-3 lead.
Later the Falcons held the slight edge 8-6 but scored three unanswered points off a service ace by Hook, a Kangaroo error, and a kill from
Mary Underman to increase the lead 11-6. SUNY Canton kept in it responding with points of their own but Messiah continued to dominate.
Leading 18-12 Messiah scored seven-straight points to finish out the third and final set.
Kristen Douglas started that scoring run with a kill and then finished it with two service aces to give Messiah the third set win 25-12.
Match Two: Messiah 1, Susquehanna University 3 (17-25, 15-25, 25-21, 19-25)
The first set of play was competitive as points were traded back-and-forth early but Susquehanna utilized a couple scoring runs to break away from Messiah.
Trailing 8-7 the River Hawks tallied five-straight points to extend their lead 13-7. The Falcons responded with two points of their own off a kill by Hanna Baumer and a Susquehanna error to pull within four 13-9.
With Messiah only trailing by three 14-11 the River Hawks put together another scoring run, this time tallying five unanswered points to start pulling away from the Falcons. Later trailing 21-13 Messiah scored two points off a kill by
Jane Underman and Susquehanna error to cut the lead 21-15 but it wasn't enough.
Susquehanna would keep a comfortable lead the rest of the set going on to win 25-17.
In the second set Messiah found themselves trailing 3-0 early but responded by scoring five-straight points to take the lead 5-3. In the scoring run
Braedyn Gallagher hammered down three kills.
Later in the set Messiah held the slight advantage 14-12 but Susquehanna scored ten-straight points to take the lead 22-14. Messiah responded and tallied a point off a kill from
Taylor Hook but the River Hawks scored the final three points of the set to win 25-15.
Messiah played strong in the third set and trailing in the match 2-0 needed the win to keep the match going. In the third set they finished with 15 kills, a .250 attack percentage, and committed four errors.
The Falcons jumped to a quick 3-0 lead off kills from
Jane Underman and
Hannah Baumer, and an error by the River Hawks. This set was very competitive and points were traded but Messiah utilized a scoring run mid-way through the set to break away from Susquehanna.
With the score tied at 13 Messiah tallied seven-straight points to take the lead 21-13. In that scoring run
Kristen Douglas had three kills,
Taylor Hook had one, and
Jessica Zellers recorded a service ace.
The River Hawks slowly cut into the Falcon's lead but with the score 24-21 in favor of Messiah a kill by
Braedyn Gallagher gave them the set three victory 25-21.
Messiah started strong in the fourth set but Susquehanna proved to be too much as they went on to win 25-18.

Braedyn Gallagher to pull within six but again the River Hawks answered with three unanswered points increasing their lead 19-10.
Messiah kept battling and scored three points off a kills by
Braedyn Gallagher,
Jane Underman, who also had a service ace, to cut the lead 19-13. Susquehanna, however, held the advantage the rest of the set and even though the Falcons made a late-set run the River Hawks went on to win the fourth and final set 25-19.
