Grantham, PA -
Marisa Weaver scored just five minutes into the game, and No. 6 Messiah College scored three goals in the second-half to defeat defending National Champion and No. 3-ranked Williams College by a 4-1 score. Weaver,
Julia Kyne, and
Skylar Ulry all tallied in the second period to give the Falcons the win and send them back to the Division III Final Four.
Messiah was outshot in the game, 12-7, but they put six of their attempts on frame, with four going for goals.
Sara Yunez came up big on the other end as she recorded six saves.
The Falcons will now travel to the program's 12th Final Four in Salem, Va. to play University of Chicago after the Maroons got past Pomona-Pitzer in a shootout after a 1-1 draw. The game will be played on Friday, Dec. 2 at 5:00 p.m.
"I'm proud of this group, we really played well today," Messiah head coach
Scott Frey said. "We executed well and played through the end. (Williams) is a terrific team, and they made us work, and we responded."
The Messiah "response" took all of 4:15 as
Marisa Weaver slipped behind the defense to receive a pass from
Sunny Gelnovatch and fire one past keeper Olivia Barnhill for an early 1-0 lead. The goal was electric and left Barnhill with almost no time to react as it hit the net.
Messiah's early tally held up all the way into the second-half when the tone of the game changed quickly; the teams were playing through on-and-off blizzard conditions throughout the afternoon, and soon a flurry of goals arrived. In the 73rd minute the Falcons were set-up for their second goal when a Williams foul gave them a free-kick outside of the box. After the ball was touched by both
Julia Kyne and
Emily Lockwood, Weaver drilled a shot into the top of the goal for a 2-0 lead.
With the weather conditions as they were, one might think that's all the Falcons needed with just over 15 minutes to play, but Kyne tallied herself just 1:05 later to make it 3-0. Undeterred from the deficit, The Ephs' Audrey Thomas took a pass from Alison Lu less than a minute later to make it 3-1.
With Williams pressing to get back into the game, the Falcons took advantage of a quick counter to add some insurance.
Sarah Strachan started the play with a strong takeaway from Williams deep in Messiah territory, and she quickly sent it into the midfield for
Brooke Firestone. The first-year forward turned just as quickly up the field and found
Skylar Ulry against the run of play on an overlap from the back line.
Ulry went right to the goal and put it through to complete the scoring, 4-1.
As mentioned, the Ephs outshot the Falcons 12-7, but they had just one more look on frame (7-6) compared to the visitors. The win ended the Ephs' season at 18-1-2.
Messiah moved to 21-2-0 with the win and will now prepare for the Division III Final Four for the second-straight season.
