San Juan, Puerto Rico - Merry Christmas, Messiah, you're 11-0.
The Falcons' women's basketball team remained undefeated in the 2016-17 season with a 63-39 win over John Carroll in their second-and-final game in Puerto Rico.
Gillian Glackin led Messiah with 21 points and four rebounds, and
Alecia Rohrer added 12 points and eight rebounds. The Falcons led from start to finish, and broke open a 30-22 lead at halftime with a dominating second-half performance.
"I thought we were really good today, especially in the second-half," Messiah head coach
Mike Miller said. "I thought our defense was also a big factor today; we did a great job challenging their best players."
Messiah's defense was certainly the story-within-the-story, as they held the Blue Streaks' leading scorer, Katlyn Spahar, to just 1-17 from the field and five points, more than 16 points before her season average. In total the Blue Streaks shot just 14-61 (23%) from the field. On the other side Messiah made 13 more field goals on the same number of attempts to finish 44% from the field.
Glackin and Rohrer did much of the damage for the Falcons as they combined for 14-25 shooting for their 33 points.
"Alecia was just fantastic, especially in the first-half," Miller said. "Gil was just great from start to finish. They had big games."
Jen Fairbanks and
Leah Springer each added eight points, while
Maci Thornton did a bit of everything to finish with seven points, eight rebounds, three steals, three assists.
Kaitlyn Hoff dished out a game-high four assists to pace the offense.
John Carroll was led in scoring by Chelbi Graham and Schmoo Pryor who scored 12 points and 10 points, respectively.
As mentioned, the win pushed Messiah to a program-record 11-0 to start the season. Messiah will now take off until January, 2017 when they host Dickinson College on Tuesday, Jan. 3 at 7:00 p.m.
