Big Bats Help Falcons Take Two From Scarlet Raptors

Grantham, PA - No. 22 Messiah College (17-2) tallied 19 hits across just 12 innings of play and swept Rutgers-Camden (9-7) in a double-header on Thursday afternoon. Courtney Allen threw a one-hitter in an 8-0 (5 inn.) win for the Falcons in the first game, and she collected her 150th career hit to set-up the first runs. In Game Two Carrie Fix hit two RBI triples to help the Falcons win 7-3.

Game One: Messiah 8, Rutgers-Camden 0 (5 innings)
Following a relatively quiet first and second inning, the Falcons scored two runs in the third then broke the game open in the fourth, posting six runs on five hits. The 8-0 advantage remained steadfast as right-hander Courtney Allen held the Scarlet Raptors to just one hit in the five inning victory.

Becky Notte's two-run double gave the Falcons the early 2-0 lead in the third with Carrie Fix and Courtney Allen each scoring on the hit. Fix made her way onto the base path via a leadoff double then was followed by Allen's bunt single. The bunt marked Allen's 150th career hit as a Falcon.

Messiah hit through the lineup in the bottom of the fourth, breaking things open with six runs on five hits. Fix, Amanda Jones, Erin Cressman, Amber Bingaman, and Sydney Boreman each singled in the hit-fest with Jones (2), Cressman (1), Bingaman (1), and Boreman (1) picking up the RBI in the frame.

Allen was spectacular from the mound, as well, never giving the Scarlet Raptors a chance to get in the game. She faced 17 batters and allowed just two to reach base via a single and a walk. Allen struck out four en route to her ninth win of the season.

Game Two: Messiah 7, Rutgers-Camden 3
Carrie Fix pounded two triples to lead the Falcons' offense and picked up the win from the mound in the second game of Thursday's double header.

Fix helped get the Falcons on the board in the third when she knocked in Shannon Denny on a two-out triple down the right field line. In the next at-bat, Brooke Pompeo sent an RBI single up the middle, giving the Falcons the 2-0 lead.

Messiah extended their lead in the bottom of the fifth, adding two more runs on two hits and one error. Much like the third, Fix delivered the first run of the frame on a triple to right field. Amanda Petersen scored on the play with Fix crossing the plate moments later on a passed ball.

The Scarlet Raptors got on the board in the top of the sixth on a two-run homerun by Brittany Scott. After giving up the dinger, Fix was replaced on the mound by the Falcons' reliever, Madelyn Yannetti, who closed out the inning without allowing a hit.

In the bottom of the frame, the Falcons added three more runs to their tally as a result of three hits, an error, a walk, and a hit-by-pitch.

Amanda Jones got things going with a lead off double down the left field line then was followed by an RBI single up the middle by Erin Cressman. Following an error and another single up the middle, this time by Shannon Denny, the Falcons had bases loaded with just one out. Their prolific offensive strike forced the Scarlet Raptors to make a pitching change. Brittany Scott replaced Abby Merryman on the mound, but the change didn't faze the Falcons. Messiah scored two more runs before the inning ended to take a 7-2 lead. The first run crossed the plate when with base loaded, Fix was hit by a pitch. In the next at-bat, Brooke Pompeo walked on four straight pitches to push the final run of the inning across the plate.

The Scarlet Raptors added a final run in the top of the seventh when Jalene Garcia singled, stole second, then advanced to third on a single. She later scored on a ground out to first base.

Fix earned the win and moves to 6-1 on the season. In five innings of work, she gave up two runs on five hits, walked one and struck out two. Yannetti faced nine batters in just two innings and gave up one run on two hits and struck out four. Abby Merryman (3-3) was charged with the loss.

Fix was also stellar from the plate, going 5-for-6 on the day with a double, two triples, and three RBI.

The Falcons will next travel to Susquehanna University on Saturday for another non-conference doubleheader. The first game is set to begin at 1:00 p.m.
