Red Devils Rally Late, Edge Falcons

Grantham, PA - Tara Cuddihy made 12 saves and Dickinson College outscored Messiah 6-2 in the second-half to win 13-11 over the Falcons. Anne Dunster scored four times for the Red Devils and Maddy Siebold tallied three goals of her own. Allie Colson, Courtney Wagner, and Annika Johnsen each tallied twice for Messiah.

The loss dropped No. 14 Messiah to an even 4-4 while the Red Devils improved to 4-3.

Cuddihy was undoubtedly the difference maker for the Red Devils as eight of her saves came in the second-half alone. Two of those saves came on free-position shots from the Falcons, and each stand by Cuddihy proved significant considering Messiah went 9-9 on clears and put 10 shots on goal in the final 30 minutes.

The defensive performance from Cuddihy and her teammates supported a slow-but-steady attack that scored six goals in the first 21:15 of the final period. Siebold tallied back-to-back goals midway through the frame to tie the game at 10-10, and Jennifer Morrissey's scored with 16:25 remaining gave the visitors the lead for good. Messiah's final goal came from Colson with 12:08 to play.

Dickinson's shut-down performance in the second-half made Falcon fans forget a strong opening period by the hosts. Ida Ehrhardt tallied less than three minutes into the game and, midway through the first-half, Messiah led 5-3 after three-straight goals by Wagner, Colson, and Wagner again. Dickinson did rally to score three-straight and go up 6-5, but Annika Johnsen tallied two unassisted goals to help Messiah keep pace. With 4:41 left in the first-half Audrey Liberati executed a fantastic spin dodge to get to the cage for a quick score, and Messiah went up 8-7.

Jamie Biship scored just 20 seconds later off a reverse spin of her own, and Messiah went up 9-7. They took that lead into the second-half, and the teams traded goals early to give Messiah a 10-8 lead with 28:32 to play.

Stephanie Athens was held scoreless for the Falcons but she did collect two assists and a team-high totals in groundballs (4) and caused turnovers (3). She added three draw controls while Ehrhardt collected a career-high eight draw controls to lead all players and help Messiah to a 16-10 edge in the category. Alex Dipeso tallied eight saves for the Falcons.

The Falcons will next play on Saturday when they start MAC Commonwealth play against Albright College. Messiah will host the contest at 1:00 p.m.
