Falcons Fall in Extra Innings to Bobcats

Cabo Rojo, PR - The Messiah baseball team continued their Spring Break trip with a game against the University of Pittsburgh-Greensburg Bobcats on Tuesday afternoon. Nine innings wasn't enough for the Falcons and Bobcats, but four runs in the 10th inning propelled the Bobcats to the 6-2 victory.

The Falcons had the first opportunity to strike in the bottom of the third. With two outs Messiah loaded the bases on a Ben Sollenberger single, an Adam Janney double to right, and a Joseph Saufley walk. Unfortunately for the Falcons, a fly out for red-hot Colin Fry ended the inning.

Brandon Shirk started for the Falcons and kept the Bobcats off the board through the first three innings, while facing the minimum number of hitters. In the fourth however, the Bobcats struck for a pair of runs on an RBI single and a sacrifice fly.

With Pitt-Greensburg now leading 2-0, the Falcons tied the game with some small ball in the bottom of the fifth. With one away and runners covering the corners, Colin Fry put down a bunt that scored Adam Janney and landed him on first base. Later in the inning the Falcons tied it up on a well-executed first and third play that allowed Joseph Saufley to score from third.

With the score tied at 2-2, the Falcons escaped a jam in the top of the sixth when Drew Betz was called on with two runners in scoring position and just one out. Betz put out the fire without allowing a run by getting the next two batters to groundout and fly out to end the inning.

The game remained tied into extra innings. in the top of the 10th, the Bobcats quickly loaded the bases and proceeded to score four runs in the inning. Three runs were brought home on a pair of doubles. Messiah could not counter in the bottom half of the frame and the Bobcats would pick up the 6-2 victory in 10 innings.

Ben Sollenberger and Andrew Eyster each collected two hits on the afternoon to lead the Falcons effort at the plate.
