Clermont, FL - Messiah softball went 2-2 Tuesday while on Spring Break in Clermont, Florida. The Falcons were in dominant form in their first game, beating Pitt-Greensburg 10-1 in just five innings. In the night cap, Messiah bested Ohio Wesleyan University 6-2.
Messiah 10, Pitt-Greensburg 1 (5 innings)The Falcons scored six runs in the first inning against the University of Pittsburgh Greensburg and tacked on four more to bring home the 10-1 victory in just five innings.
Messiah hit five straight singles in the first frame, then followed with a sacrific fly from
Erin Cressman to score three early runs. With two on and just one out,
Amber Bingaman hit a laser to right field that wasn't able to be corraled by the Bobcats. The miscue allowed all three runners to score, doubling the Falcons' advantage to 6-1 in just the first inning.
The Falcons tacked on three more runs on three hits in the bottom of the third.
Brooke Pompeo (1) and
Becky Notte (2) each were credited with RBI in the frame.
In the fourth, the Falcons used a single, a walk, and two hit batters to push their final run across the plate and take a decisive 10-1 lead. The Bobcats were unable to score in their last attempts, finalizing the win for the Falcons.
Starting pitcher
Carrie Fix (2-1) threw four complete innings before
Madelyn Yannetti came into the game in the fifth to close things out for the Falcons. Fix faced 16 batters and gave up one run on just two hits. She fanned two and walked three in four innings of work. Yannetti faced four batters and gave up one hit.
Offensively, seven different Falcons picked up hits in the game with Fix (3-3), Notte (3-3, 3 RBI), and Bingaman (2-3, 3 RBI) leading the way.
Messiah 6, Ohio Wesleyan 2The Falcons (5-1) posted single runs in the third and fourth innings then added two more in both the fifth and seventh innings to seal the 6-2 win over Ohio Wesleyan (1-2).
Amber Bingaman and
Erin Cressman homered in the game to lift the Falcons over the Battling Bishops.
Cressman led the team with four RBI.
The Falcons strung together four consecutive hits - all with two outs - to score their first run of the game in the third inning.
Courtney Allen,
Becky Notte,
Haylee Anders, and
Amanda Jones each were credited with hits, while Anders picked up the RBI.
Bingaman added another run to the mix with a solo homerun in the third. The dinger was her second of the season.
In the fourth the Falcons doubled their advantage, posting two more runs to take a 4-0 lead. With two outs and no body on, both Anders and Jones were hit by errant pitches, resulting in a more favorable position for Messiah. In the next at-bat, Cressman doubled to left field to score both runners.
The Battling Bishops got on the board in the bottom of the sixth on a two-run homer from Taylor Dickson.
The Falcons answered the call in the top of the seventh when Notte doubled to lead off the inning then was followed by a two-run homerun by Cressman, her second homerun of the season, to pull ahead 6-2.
The tally would stand through the bottom of the frame as Allen retired all three batters faced.
With the complete-game win, Allen moves to 3-0 on the season. She allowed just two runs on seven hits, struck out four and walked one.
The Falcons return to action tomorrow when they face Aurora University at 9:00 a.m.
