Chester, PA - No. 19 Messiah College scored the first five goals and
Jenna Stover matched a career-high with five goals of her own to help the Falcons to a big MAC Commonwealth win over Widener. Stover added two assists and three others added double-digit helpers in the 19-7 win.
Stover tallied four of the Falcons' first five goals and then scored later in the half to match her career-best total which, coincidentally, came at Widener during the 2014 season. The 5-0 lead was built before 11 minutes was off the clock, and Widener broke through for the first time with 18:55 to play.
Annika Johnsen andn
Shayna Delaney answered with back-to-back tallies as the visitors increased their lead to 7-1.
As the first period was closing Messiah tallied four-straight goals to put the game stronlgy in hand.
Allie Colson,
Stephanie Athens,
Audrey Liberati, and Stover all scored in that stretch, with each of those tallies coming on separate assists by
Ida Ehrhardt,
Liz Brennan, Stover, and Athens, respectively.
In the second-half Messiah scored seven more goals off six more assists. In total, 11 of Messiah's 19 goals came on helpers, with Stover, Athens, Brennan, and
Amanda Wivell each hitting two assists.
Messiah's offense was helped along by dominating possession, with Colson (5) and Liberati (4) combining for nine draw controls to help the Falcons to an 18-10 advantage in that category. The Falcons also went 11-15 on clears and nearly doubled the Pride in groundballs (21-11) as they limited Widener's chances to creep back in. The result was Widener attempting just 13 total shots, with 12 going on cage.
As mentioned, Stover's goal output matched a career-high, and her seven points was one more than a previous season-high set against Lycoming last week. Delaney added three goals, with four others-- Liberati, Colson, Johnsen, and
Courtney Wagner-- each tallying twice, respectively.
The Falcons next play on Wednesday, Apr. 20 when they host Stevenson at 4:00 p.m
