Strong Pitching Propels Falcons Past Albright

Reading, PA - The No.16 Messiah College Falcons (30-3, 12-0) earned two MAC Commonwealth wins Thursday afternoon over Albright College (23-12, 6-6).

Courtney Allen (15-0) held the Lions to just three hits in Game One to claim the victory and remain undefeated on th year. In the low-scoring affair, Becky Notte picked up her 13th double of the season, tying Steph Schell '13 with 48 career doubles.

In Game Two, starter Carrie Fix and reliever Madelyn Yannetti combined for the 9-1 win. Fix gave up the only run to the Lions in the bottom of the first, but held them to just three hits before Yannetti entered the game. The Falcons' pitching staff holds the losted combined ERA (1.90) in the MAC Commonwealth.

Game One - Messiah 2, Albright 0
After two scoreless innings Brooke Pompeo deliverd a two-run single to right field in the top of the third to give the Falcons the 2-0 lead.

Amber Bingaman started off the inning with a lead off single, but the next two batters failed to move her to second by way of a bunt, resulting in two straight popped up bunts to the catcher. Events quickly turned in the Falcons' favor, however, when Carrie Fix hit the ball to right field, but the ball was misplayed, allowing Bingaman to move on to third and Fix to stop at second. With runners in scoring position, Pompeo drove the ball to right once again, scoring the two tallies.

Those runs would hold through the remainder of the game as neither team was able to push additional runs across the plate.

The Lions did manage to get runners on base in five of seven innings, but the Falcons shut down any real opportunities to score.

Aside from the third inning, the Falcons also struggled to manufacture much offensive output. The only shining moments came in the sixth and the seventh innings, when Notte and Fix, respectively, hit doubles in an attempt to jumpstart the offense. Neither player moved from the spot, though, ending up stranded at second.

As mentioned previously, Notte's double brought her career total to 48, which ties her with Steph Schell for the highest mark in program history.

Game Two - Messiah 9, Albright 1
The Lions were the first to score in Game Two, using a three-hit frame to post a single run in the bottom of the first. In the very next inning, Albright's leadoff hitter made her way onto the bases via an error, but the Falcons quickly negated the miscue with a bang-bang double play.

To start the third, the Falcons gave the ball to Madelyn Yannetti who held the Lions to five hits throught the remaining innings.

The Falcons took a 2-1 lead in the top of the fourth when Pompeo and Allen hit back-to-back triples then was followed by a sacrifice fly from Notte.

Messiah extended their lead in the top of the fifth, hitting through the lineup to go ahead 8-1. Sydney Boreman and Fix each doubled before Amanda Jones jacked a two-run homerun over the left field fence to push the Falcons ahead 7-1. The final run of the inning came on an RBI double from Amber Bingaman.

The Falcons weren't done there, though, as they added a single run in the seventh. Their final tally was knocked in by Jordan McLain in the two-hit frame.

Yannetti earned the win and moves to 5-1 on the season. Through five innings of work, she limited the Lions to four hits and stuckout one. Fix faced 10 batters and gave up just one run on three hits.

The Falcons return to action on Saturday when they host Stevenson University at 1:00 p.m.
