Messiah College Falcons | No. 11 NFCA |
Location: Grantham, Pa.
Coach: Amy Weaver (19th season, 536-256-1 with the Falcons)
2016 Record: 39-3, 16-0 MAC Commonwealth
NCAA Tournament Appearance: 10th
Last NCAA Tournament Result: 2014 Regionals at Rochester; went 1-2 with losses to both Alfred State and Rochester University.
The Falcons went undefeated (16-0) in the MAC Commonwealth for the second-straight season, and they now have a conference regular-season win streak of 39 games dating back to Apr. 16, 2014. Messiah went 3-0 in the conference postseason tournament, with wins over the No. 2, 3, and 4 seeds. Messiah won each game by at least four runs.
Messiah's 39 wins are tied for the second-most in program history (1999, 2011) behind their 43 wins collected en route to the National Championship in 2009. This year's group has built their total on the back of two different double-digit win streaks: a 17-game stretch earlier this season and their current 15-game run.
The Falcons' deep and powerful lineup can win with power, patience, and small ball. Five different players bat .350 or higher, five different players have 45 or more hits, and seven different players have 24 or more RBI. Five players also have at least 115 at-bats while holding on-base percentages of .415 or higher.
On the mound the Falcons have put together a team ERA of 1.78 with 205 strikeouts over 42 games. Courtney Allen leads the way with a program-record 22-0 record and 1.44 ERA over 146.1 innings pitched.
Players to Watch
- Courtney Allen's performance from the rubber has been impressive, but she's been even better as of late: in her last 10 appearances Allen has pitched 59.0 innings with a 0.59 ERA and 56 strikeouts against just 44 hits and 21 walks. At the plate Allen is also a factor as she's batting .429 (34-91) over the past 30 games.
- Becky Notte became Messiah's all-time leader in doubles (51) and RBI (137) this season, and she also became just the third-player ever to pass 200 hits. She has a career-best 64 hits this season.
- Erin Cressman is having a terrific first season with Falcons as she leads the team with 44 RBI. She's also second on the team with 86 total bases and her 10 home runs is a single-season record for Messiah. Over the weekend she went 4-7 with two home runs, a double, five RBI, and three runs scored.
- Amanda Jones leads the team with a career-best .441 batting average, and her impressive arm from the shortstop hole is invaluable to the Falcons' infield defense.
- Carrie Fix is among 25 players remaining on the NFCA Player of the Year Watch List. She's batting .390 with 57 hits, a program-record 18 doubles, a team-best 90 total bases, and 28 RBI. |

Christopher Newport University Captains | No. 10 NFCA |
Location: Newport News, Va.
Coach: Keith Parr (13th season, 439-141-1 with the Captains)
2016 Record: 34-7, 12-2 Capital Athletic Conference
NCAA Tournament Appearance: 14th
Last NCAA Tournament Result: 2015 Super Regionals at Salisbury; went 0-2 to Salisbury.
The Captains are making their 14th appearance in the NCAA Tournament, and their 10th-straight. They are an at-large selection from the CAC after losing to No. 2 Salisbury in the conference tournament.
CNU has seven losses this season, but six of them have come to teams ranked No. 1, 2, or 3 in the nation: two losses to No. 1 Virgina Wesleyan; three losses to No. 2 Salisbury; and one loss to No. 3 Texas-Tyler. Their only other loss came in the front end of a double-header with Frostburg State—a game that included an eight-run 10th inning by the Bobcats that broke a 5-5 tie.
The Captains started the season with a 14-game win streak, and they went 12-2 in the CAC. They are 18-4 on their home field this season.
Players to Watch
- Scoop Simon was a First Team All-CAC honoree and she leads the Captains in 11 different categories: average (.471), runs (43), hits (56), doubles (15), triples (3), home runs (9), RBI (51), total bases (104), slugging (.874), walks (32), and on-base percentage (.591). Simon is undoubtedly the Captains' best player and is capable of impacting the game in any at-bat.
- Tori Clarke is batting .355 and has started every game for the Captains in the past two seasons. She holds down second base for the Captains and is second on the team to Simon in walks with 29.
- Tara Heatwole is the unquestioned ace of the staff after slinging 124.1 innings to a 1.97 ERA. She is not guaranteed to overpower hitters (58 strikeouts) but her tremendous command yielded just 18 walks to 488 total batters (1.02/7). She holds opponents to a .244 batting average, and if you take away her 10-inning, six-earned run outing against Frostburg, her ERA drops to 1.78. |

NCAA Tournament Appearance: 4th

The final two wins came over Averett by 3-2 and 10-1 scores, respectively.
Ferrum has not played since winning two games over Randolph College on Apr. 20. They are riding an eight-game win streak—the second time they've accomplished that mark this season—but they've also endured two different five-game losing streaks this season.
First year head coach Gerald Culler leads the Panthers into the Tournament.
