Grantham, PA -
Becky Notte knocked in two RBI to become the program's career RBI leader with 133 in Tuesday's sweep of Dickinson College (15-24).
The No.13 Falcons (36-3) scored early in Game One and held on to beat the Red Devils 3-0. In Game Two, the Falcons collected 17 total hits and used a five-run fourth to pull ahead and eventually win 11-6.
Carrie Fix,
Courtney Allen, and
Erin Cressman each went 3-for-4 with two RBI to lead the Falcons in the night cap.
Game One - Messiah 3, Dickinson 0
The Falcons scored two runs in the first then added a single run in the third, claiming the low-scoring, 3-0 win over Dickinson College in Game One of Tuesday's non-conference double header.
Courtney Allen had another stellar performance on the mound, throwing five innings of scoreless softball. She allowed just three hits and fanned seven before giving way to
Carrie Fix, who closed out Game One. Fix yielded a single baserunner through two no-hit innings. Allen moved to 19-0 with the win.
The Falcons jumped on the Red Devils' starter Madison Milaszewski early, making solid contact and shelling six hits through three innings.
Brooke Pompeo and
Courtney Allen hit back-to-back doubles in the first frame, setting up
Amanda Jones who drove in the two runs. Jones' RBI single was a borderline blooper to right field that was almost caught. Dickinson's right fielder got a late start but sprinted forward, attempted a diving catch. Despite the effort, the ball escaped her glove before she was able to control it, resulting in the early tallies.
Much like the first inning, the Dynamic Duo of Pompeo and Allen made things happen. Both batters laid down picture perfect bunts for a hit. With two on and two out
Erin Cressman drove a single up the middle to score Pompeo for her team-leading 37th RBI to date.
The 3-0 lead would hold through the remainder of the game, giving the Falcons their 35th win of the season.
Game Two - Messiah 11, Dickinson 6
Dickinson's offensive drought from Game One didn't carry over into the night cap, as they strung together six runs on eight hits and three Messiah errors. Fortunately, the Falcons scored in bunches to stay ahead of the rallying Red Devils, posting three runs in both the first and sixth innings while adding five runs in the fourth to claim the 11-6 victory.
The Falcons took a 3-0 lead after the first inning, using five hits and one Dickinson error. Fix, Allen, Jones, and Cressman each singled, while Notte added a double to her ever-growing tally. Allen, Notte, and Cressman were credited with the RBI.
The Red Devils pulled within a single run in the top of the fourth when they scored two runs on two hits and one Messiah error. Their rally was short-lived, however, as the Falcons responded with five runs on six hits in the bottom of the frame. The inning was highlighted by Fix's two-run homerun, Allen's RBI triple, and Cressman's RBI double.
The offensive onslaught gave the Falcons a commanding 8-2 lead and forced Dickinson to make a pitching change. The Red Devils replaced starter Killian Kueny with Game One starter Madison Milaszewski.
Dickinson cut into the Falcons' lead in the top of the fifth, scoring two runs on two hits and another Messiah error. With the 8-4 lead, the Falcons made a pitching change of their own.
Natalie Lamoreaux replaced starter
Madelyn Yannetti to begin the sixth. Lamoreaux held the Red Devils to just one hit and kept them off the board.
The Falcons extended their lead in the bottom of the sixth, tacking on three runs on three hits. After a lead off walk by pinch-hitter
Chelsea Sommerville, Allen used another bunt-for-a-hit to put runners in scoring position. In the next at-bat, Notte singled to left center, scoring Sommerville for her 28th RBI of the season. The historic tally moved Notte to the head of the program's leaderboard with 133 career RBI. Notte surpassed Jacklyn Merkel (2009-2012) who held the previous record of 132 career RBI.
The Red Devils continued to plug away in the top of the seventh.
Carrie Fix, who replaced Lamoreaux on the mound to start the inning, yielded two runs on two hits and two hit batters. Fix stranded two runners to close out the game with the 11-6 victory.
Yannetti (8-1) earned the win with the help of Lamoreaux's and Fix's contributions. Yannetti gave up four runs (three earned) on five hits while striking out three and walking two. Lamoreaux (one hit) and Fix (two runs, two hits) each pitched one inning.
As mentioned previously, Fix (two RBI), Allen (two RBI), Jones (one RBI), and Cressman (two RBI) each went 3-for-4. Jones and Cressman led the team with three RBI a piece.
With the wins, the Falcons closeout their regular season with an overall record of 36-3. The Falcons haven't seen this much success since the 2009 season when they finished the regular season at 32-4 and went on to win the National Championship. They finished that year with an overall record of 43-4.
With such success, the Falcons enthusiastically enter the MAC Commonwealth Championship with the No.1 seed. The tournament, held at Messiah College, begins on Friday at 10:00 a.m. The Falcons' first game will be at 2:00 p.m. against the winner of No.5 Arcadia and No.4 Stevenson.
