Owings Mills, MD – The Falcons of Messiah College struggled offensively against the Mustangs of Stevenson University and fell by a 10-3 final in the MAC Commonwealth Championship game. Messiah was held scoreless during the entire second half during their second consecutive loss to Stevenson in the MAC Commonwealth Championship.
Matthew Franken led the Falcons in scoring with two goals.
The Mustangs controlled the first half of play by heading into the second half with a 6-3 lead. Both squads played tough team defense throughout the first quarter until Stephen Bannick found an opening with 3:55 remaining in the first quarter to start the scoring.
Trailing 1-0,
Matthew Franken notched his first of two goals in the first half by ripping a shot from 15 yards out in the top right corner.
Tyler Goglio kept his eye up behind the cage and fed the open Franken.
Stevenson opened up offensively in the second quarter and outscored Messiah 5-2. The Mustangs began the scoring in the second quarter when Sean Olhaver dodged to the cage and scored for a 2-1 Stevenson lead. Next,
Matthew Franken tallied his second goal of the half by spinning back toward the cage and burying the shot in the back of the net.
With the score notched at two a piece, Stevenson rallied for four unanswered goals. Notching goals for the Mustangs during the stretch was Kyle D'Onfrio, Matt Thompkins (2), and Stephen Bannick.
Messiah added a much needed goal towards the end of the second quarter when Blake Knbloch fed
Chris Bry who sniped a shot past the goal keeper for Messiah's third goal of the game.
Messiah struggled to get open looks at the cage in the second half and was held scoreless for the remainder of the game. However, the Mustangs found the back of the net twice in the third quarter with goals from Kyle D'Onfrio and Parish Young, and twice in the fourth quarter with score from Parish Young and Matt Thompkins.
Statistically, the Falcons were bested in shots (33-21) and ground balls (24-20).
