Grantham, PA - Messiah College women's tennis capped off a dominating season in the MAC Commonwealth as they earned their first-ever conference title, 5-0 over Alvernia University. The win pushed Messiah to 12-5 overall and qualifies them for the first NCAA Tournament appearance in program history. The 5-0 score mirrored that of their semifinal win over Lebanon Valley from earlier this week. Across the regular-season and postseason matches Messiah dropped just a single game.
The Falcons' doubles play got it done early in the afternoon as each duo found victory to begin the sweep.
Ashli Livermore/
Kelly Hopkins and
Kaitlyn Russell/
Carly Dove each won 8-5, and
Sydney Schandel/
Meagan Scala won 8-3.
Later in singles play it was MAC Commonwealth Rookie of the Year
Kaitlyn Russell and
Sydney Schandel who completed the sweep and finished the Falcons' first-ever conference title.
Kaitlyn Russell's 6-2, 6-0 victory made point number four, and
Sydney Schandel's 6-0, 6-1 win clinched the title. Schandel went on to win the Most Valuable Player award after her clutch victory.
As mentioned, the win clinches the program's first ever NCAA Tournament appearance. The Falcons will find out early next week who their next opponent is, where the match will be played, and what day it will be played.
