Grantham, PA – The Messiah College women's volleyball team went undefeated in their tri-match beating the Bullets of Gettysburg College (17-25, 25-23, 25-11, 27-25) and finished the day with a sweep over Moravian College (27-25, 25-13, 25-10). The Falcons improve to 6-1 on the season with the wins this afternoon.
Match One: Gettysburg College 3-1 (17-25, 25-23, 25-11, 27-25).
After dropping a first set with Gettysburg Messiah responded to win three-straight and take the 3-1 match win.
Kristen Douglas and
Mary Underman each collected 12 kills, and
Jane Underman joined in double-figures with 11 kills of her own.
Mary Underman also put down two solo blocks and Messiah finished with three solo blocks and eight blocks assists overall.
Brooke Gallagher dished out a season-high 47 assists in the win.
The Falcons struggled to find a flow in the first set and were out hit (.219-.118) by the Bullets. Down 21-11 Messiah would score five points off four kills and an attack error by the Bullets to pull within five but the Gettysburg would stay in control the rest of the set and win 25-17.
The second set saw the Falcon offense come alive throwing down 14 team kills in the set win. With Messiah leading 23-17 a tremendous block by
Mary Underman would increase their lead to 24-17. The Bullets would rally for six-straight points and trail Messiah 24-23 but a kill by
Mary Underman would seal the victory for the Falcons 25-23.
In the third set Messiah quickly jumped to an 8-1 lead and stayed in control the rest of the way. Leading 16-7 an outstanding block assist by
Mary Underman and
Braedyn Gallagher would push Messiah's lead to double digits, 17-7.
With the score 22-11 in Messiah's favor, kills by Underman, Douglas, and
Taylor Hook would finish the third set with the Falcons winning 25-11. Messiah finished with an impressive .469 attack percentage and tallied 16 kills while committing just one error in set three.
The fourth and final set proved to be the most competitive of the match with a lot of back-and-forth scoring. With Messiah leading 19-17 the Bullets scored three consecutive points to take the lead 20-19. The Falcons would regain the lead off an attack error by Gettysburg and a kill by
Braedyn Gallagher to go up 21-20.
Tied at 24-24 a kill by
Kristen Douglas would put Messiah up one but Gettysburg would respond with a kill by Stephanie Blair to tie it up once again 25-25. Messiah would tally the final two match points off two Gettysburg errors and go on to win the fourth set 27-25.
Emily Zellers recorded 19 digs while Messiah finished with 56 team kills in the match win.
Match Two: Moravian College 3-0 (27-25, 25-13, 25-10)
Messiah College would earn the clean sweep over the Greyhounds of Moravian College to finish up play on Saturday afternoon.
Jane Underman and
Kristen Douglas tallied 12 kills and
Mary Underman added nine of her own.
Brooke Gallagher finished with 35 assists and 10 digs while
Emily Zellers recorded 12 digs in the win.
The first set saw two very evenly matched teams as points were traded back-and-forth. With the score 12-11 in favor of the Falcons, two kills and a setting error by the Greyhounds would increase their lead to 14-11. Moravian would respond and tally three points off three Messiah errors to tie the game 14-14.
The two teams would trade points for the remainder of the set and the Greyhounds had opportunity for victory with the score 25-24 but a kill by Douglas would tie it back up once again. Messiah would go on to score the final two points of the set off a Moravian attack error and service ace by
Emily Zellers winning 27-25.
The Falcons commanded the second set jumping to an early 16-5 lead and never looked back. With the score 16-7 after Moravian scored two points, Messiah would tally three consecutive points off two kills by
Mary Underman and a service ace by Hook to extend their lead 19-7.
Leading 24-13
Taylor Hook recorded her third service ace of the set sealing the 25-13 victory for the Falcons.
The third and what would be final set was similar to the second with Messiah establishing their dominance. With the score 11-5 Messiah would tally six consecutive points off three Greyhound errors and kills by
Jane Underman and Douglas.
With the Falcons leading 20-8, two service aces by
Jennifer Rusling and kills by
Mary Underman and Douglas would bring Messiah close to match victory but Moravian college would respond with two points of their own. A kill by
Alycia Park-Ferretti would give the Falcons the sweep and victory 25-10.
As a team Messiah finished with a .321 attack percentage, 46 kills, and recorded 12 service aces in the win.
The Falcons will be back in action Tuesday Sept. 13 when they take on the Crusaders of Alvernia University at 7:00 p.m. in Reading, PA.
