Falcons Defeat Bluejays, Finish 3-0 on the Weekend

Elizabethtown, Pa- The Messiah College women's volleyball team finished 3-0 this weekend at the Elizabethtown Quad as they won nine-straight sets over three matches. They have won six-straight and improve to 10-1 on the season.

Match One (25-17, 25-14, 25-13)
Messiah women's volleyball swept Rowan 3-0 (25-17, 25-14, 25-13) Friday night. Jane Underman led the team with nine kills while Taylor Hook added seven of her own. Mary Underman continued her defensive dominance tallying six blocks on the night. Brooke Gallagher had 25 assists and Emily Zellers finished with 10 digs in the win.

Messiah started their sweep with an aggressive first set. They had a higher attack percentage (.186-.062) and tallied more kills (13-6).  Leading 8-6, the Falcons scored four unanswered points off a Rowan service error and two kills by Taylor Hook to push the lead 11-6.
 
With Messiah leading 14-12 Kristen Douglas hammered down two kills, Hannah Baumer and Hook each added one, and a Rowan error extended the Falcons' lead 19-12. The Falcons found themselves four points from set victory winning 21-14 but Rowan answered with four-straight points to pull within four 21-17. Messiah fired back scoring the final four points of the set off two Rowan errors, a service ace by Hook, and a block by Jane Underman and Mary Underman earned the Falcons the 25-17 victory in set one.
 
The second set started with Messiah holding a tight 4-2 lead but the Falcons scored eight unanswered points to widen their lead 12-2. Two kills by Hook, a service ace from Emily Zellers, and five Rowan errors created the scoring streak.
 
Leading 15-5 the Profs put together a five-point scoring streak off two service aces, two kills, and one Messiah error to cut the Falcons' lead 15-10. Messiah responded and with the score 16-12 they tallied five points off kills by Jane Underman, Hannah Baumer, and three Rowan errors to lead 21-12.
 
Rowan scored two points off two Messiah errors but it was all Falcons from there on out. Kills by Mary Underman and Hannah Baumer, a service ace from Jane Underman, and error by Rowan earned the Falcons the set two win 25-14.
 
Messiah continued their momentum and aggressive play winning the third and final set 25-13. With the score 7-2, in favor of the Falcons, Brooke Gallagher served up four-straight service aces to extend the lead 10-2.
 
With a comfortable 23-11 lead Rowan tallied two points but Messiah would finish the set scoring the final two points on two back-to-back kills from Mary Underman. Messiah finished with 12 kills and a .233 attack percentage in the third set.
 
The highlight of tonight's match was most definitely the defensive dominance put forth by Messiah. As a team they finished with 37 digs and an impressive 20 blocks on the night.

Match Two (25-15, 28-26, 26-24)
Messiah defeated the University of Rochester 3-0 (25-16, 28-26, 26-24) this afternoon. Kristen Douglas led the team with 10 kills while Jane Underman and Mary Underman finished with eight. Brooke Gallagher dished out 32 assists and recorded 10 digs in the win.

Messiah dominated in the first set and had more kills (12-8), a higher attack percentage (.276-.000), and committed fewer errors (4-8) than Rochester. With the score tied early 2-2 Messiah scored four-straight points off two Rochester errors, a service ace by Jane Underman, and a kill by Mary Underman to go up 6-2.
 
The Falcons maintained the lead 12-10 and scored six unanswered points to extend the lead 18-10. Two kills by Mary Underman, three Rochester errors, and a service ace from Brooke Gallagher put together the scoring streak.
 
Leading comfortably 23-13 and two points away from set victory the Yellowjackets scored three-straight points off two kills and a service ace but that is all they would get. Messiah responded by scoring the final two points of the set on a kill by Hannah Baumer and a Rochester error to win 25-16.
 
The second set saw both teams evenly matched as points were traded back-and-forth. Messiah finished with a higher attacked percentage (.133-.023) and more kills (14-9). Messiah was down 7-1 but responded with six-straight points to tie it up 7-7. Four Rochester errors and kills by Hannah Baumer and Kristen Douglas created the scoring streak.
 
With the Falcons trailing 11-12 they scored six-straight points off kills by Taylor Hook, Jane Underman, Mary Underman, three Yellowjacket errors, and a service ace by Hook to lead 17-12. Rochester responded with three points of their own to cut the lead 17-15.
 
Tied once again 22-22 a service error by Messiah gave Rochester the lead but Kristen Douglas hammered down a kill to tie it up 23-23. With the score 26-26 a kill by Jane Underman and a Rochester error gave Messiah the second set win 28-26. 
 
Very similar to the second set the third and final set was very competitive but the Falcons would come out on top with the 26-24 win. They had a higher attack percentage (.122 -.104), had more kills (13-7), and committed less errors (7-10) than Rochester.
 
The Falcons trailed 15-12 but kills by Hanna Baumer, Taylor Hook, and Brooke Gallagher would tie the score up 15-15. Messiah continued that scoring streak and tallied three more points off two Rochester errors and a kill by Douglas to take the lead 18-15.
 
With Messiah holding a comfortable 22-17 lead, Rochester scored six-straight points off three Messiah errors and three kills to regain the lead 23-22. Messiah responded with a kill from Mary Underman to tie it up once again 23-23. Tied 24-24 two errors by the Yellowjackets earned the Falcons the 26-24 set win and match sweep 3-0.
 
Offensively Messiah finished with 39 kills but once again the defense proved to be the highlight as the Falcons recorded 16 team blocks and 55 digs in the win.

Match Three (25-22, 28-26, 25-13)
In their final match of the weekend against Elizabethtown the Falcons won 3-0 (25-22, 28-26, 25-13). Jane Underman led the team with 15 kills and finished with a .481 attack percentage while Kristen Douglas added 10 kills of her own. Brooke Gallagher tallied 29 assists and Messiah had seven team service aces.

Messiah came from behind trailing by as much as six points late in the first set to win 25-22. They tallied more kills (13-12), had a higher attack percentage (.206-.121) and committed fewer errors (6-8) than Elizabethtown in the first set.

The Falcons jumped to an early 4-0 lead off two service aces by Brooke Gallagher, a kill by Jane Underman, and an error by the Bluejays.  With Messiah trailing 7-6 Elizabethtown scored five unanswered points off two kills and three Messiah errors to extend their lead 12-6. 

Messiah responded but again found themselves down 20-14 before scoring six-straight points to tie the game up 20-20. Two kills by Hannah Baumer and Brooke Gallagher started the scoring streak while two kills from Kristen Douglas finished it. The Falcons held a slight 23-22 lead and an error by Elizabethtown and kill from Jane Underman would give Messiah the set one victory.

The Falcons would again come from behind to earn the second set victory 28-26. Messiah had a higher attack percentage (.219-.091), tallied more kills (14-11), and had less errors (7-8) than Elizabethtown. 

With Messiah trailing 9-7 Elizabethtown scored three-straight points off a kill and two Messiah errors to extend their lead 12-7. A kill by Jane Underman ended the scoring streak and pulled the Falcons within five. The Bluejays led by as much as seven, 19-12 but Messiah scored four-straight points off two Elizabethtown errors, a service ace by Danielle Weaver, and a kill by Jane Underman to cut the lead 19-16. 

Down 24-20 Messiah put together a four-point scoring streak off kills from Jane Underman and Kristen Douglas, an error by Elizabethtown, and a service ace from Emily Buckwalter to tie it up 24-24. With the game tied 26-26 the Falcons scored the final two points off two errors by the Bluejays to win the second set 28-26.

The third and final set proved different from the first two as Messiah dominated winning 25-13. The Falcons recorded more kills (14-7), had an impressive .400 attack percentage, and only committed two errors in the final set.

Leading 10-6 Messiah tallied three unanswered points off two Elizabethtown errors and a service ace by Taylor Hook to push the lead 13-6. Messiah dominated the rest of the set and with the score 19-12 they scored three-straight to extend their lead to double digits 22-12 off two Elizabethtown errors and a kill by Jane Underman

The Bluejays tallied a point but Messiah scored the final three match points off two kills by Jane Underman and one from Mary Underman to win 25-13.

Messiah finished with 45 team kills, 39 digs, and 11 blocks in the win. 

The Falcons will be back in action at home next Wednesday Sept. 21 when they take on the Warriors of Lycoming College. Match time is slated for 7:00 p.m.
