Falcons Pick Up Road Win in a Towering Performance

Frederick, MD – No. 22 Messiah women's basketball team put together an impressive performance on the road and picked up their 15th straight win on Wednesday evening. The Falcons defeated the Hood College Blazers 80 to 49 and moved to 15-0 and 6-0 in the MAC Commonwealth Conference.

Eleven Falcons contributed on the scoreboard and 13 different Falcons cleaned up on the glass. Gillian Glackin led all scorers with 16 points and picked up her seventh double-double of the season with 10 rebounds, she also collected a season-high of seven blocks. Alecia Rohrer had 12 points and eight rebounds, while Kaitlyn Hoff added 10 points and four assists. Leah Springer and Maci Thornton had eight points each and Springer also grabbed six rebounds.

The Falcons shot 35 of 75 (46.7%) from the field and eight of nine (88.9%) from the line. Messiah collected 50 total rebounds, 12 blocks, and 11 steals in their lopsided victory.

The Falcons had a very impressive second quarter scoring 25 points and holding the Blazers to four points in the 10 minutes of play. Messiah's zone defense was very effective and created chaos and miscommunication amongst Hood's offense
.
"We need to be more unpredictable. This is the first time we have used zone for more than a single possession," Head Coach Mike Miller said while commenting on his decision to run a zone defense, "Hood didn't have any pure forwards, so we didn't want to chase them around."

With Hood's lack of forwards, both Gillian Glackin and Alecia Rohrer were able to dominate in the post. Glackin had an outstanding first-half, in which she scored all of her 16 points, contributed eight boards and collected four blocks. Rohrer also had a phenomenal first-half appearance with eight points, eight rebounds, and two blocks.

Messiah came out of a half-time with the same energy that they ended the second quarter with. The Falcons started the quarter on a 6-0 run but after back-to-back lay-ups by the Blazers, they started to take some momentum away from Messiah. The Blazers tested the Falcons' front line with a full court trap, but after a quick timeout by Coach Miller, the Falcons were able to quickly regain control of the game.

Leah Springer led the Falcons in second-half scoring with six points, and Kristen Smoluk and Becca Isaac each added five points in the last 20 minutes of play. With depth being one of the Falcons strengths, 16 Falcons were able to see court time against the Blazers and Messiah's bench outscored Hood's bench 34 to 11.

"We have some players banged up and sick in our top 10, so it was a good opportunity to play a lot of people." Miller said.

Allie Appleby led the Blazers with 14 points and nine rebounds and Dajah Gee added eleven points and five boards.

The Falcons are back in action on Jan. 14 in Brubaker Auditorium at 3:00 p.m. when they take on Albright College.
