ANNVILLE, Pa. - The Middle Atlantic Conferences (MAC) has announced its 2017 All-MAC Commonwealth field hockey teams ahead of the conference tournament that begins tonight. A total of six Falcons were named to the teams, including three special awards:
Carissa Gehman as Offensive Player of the Year,
Shayna Landis as Defensive Player of the Year, and
Brooke Good as Coach of the Year.
Along with Gehman and Landis,
Kristin Donohue and
Shelby Landes were also named to the First Team, while
Taylor Holt picked up Honorable Mention honors.
The Coach of the Year award is the third-straight for Good, who a year after winning the program's first National Championship, has led the Falcons to a perfect 17-0 record and a No. 1 ranking in Division III that has held throughout the season. In her six years at the helm of Messiah field hockey, Good has compiled a 103-24 overall record, including 41-3 in MAC Commonwealth action.
Gehman received her fourth-straight First Team honor, and first Player of the Year award. The senior leads a Messiah attack that ranks third in the nation in scoring average (4.45) and second in scoring margin (3.86). Individually, her 26 goals lead the conference (10 more than second-place), eight assists are tied for third, 60 points is first (20 more than second-place), and eight game-winning goals is first. Nationally, her goals mark ranks third and points mark ranks fourth. Gehman's five goals in a game against Stevenson broke the Messiah program record for goals in a game, and she has also vaulted into fourth-place in MAC history with 219 career points and third-place in MAC history with 99 career goals.
Landis receives the second special conference award of her career, as she was named the Rookie of the Year as a freshman in 2015. The junior anchors a defense that is second in the nation with a .59 goals against average and tied for second with 10 shutouts. The back line has also held opponents to just 2.9 shots per game this season, including four games without a shot and ten total with two or less. Landis also has a goal and an assist to her credit on the offensive end.
Donohue receives her second-straight First Team award, continuing her career of solid end-to-end play in the midfield, notching four goals on the year to go with a MAC Commonwealth-leading ten assists. The senior has had three games this year with multiple assists, two of which came in conference play against Lebanon Valley and Stevenson. With her ten assists this season, she has moved into fifth-place in Messiah history with 33 in her career.
Landes' First Team nod is the first such honor of her career, and third-straight All-MAC Commonwealth recognition. The junior leads the country with a .54 goals against average, only allowing eight goals in Messiah's 17 games on the year. She also has six solo shutouts to her credit out of the team's ten, and has held opponents to one goal or less in all but one of the Falcons' contests this year.
Holt earns Honorable Mention honors for the third-straight season, coming in second on the team with ten goals and 24 points on the year. In Messiah's win over Widener, Holt scored the 50th goal of her career, just the 14th Messiah player to do so.Â
Messiah will begin the run for their sixth-straight MAC Commonwealth title under Good and their 11th-straight overall tonight when they host No. 4-seed Albright College in semifinal action at 7:00 p.m. on Anderson Field.
