Lexington, Ky. - Messiah women's volleyball player
Mary Underman was honored this afternoon by the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA),
as she was named Honorable Mention All-American.
This is the first All-American accolade for Underman and it is certainly a deserved honor after her impressive play this season. She was tabbed as the 2017 MAC Commonwealth Player of the Year, becoming the second player in program history to receive the award, and was named First Team All-Region earlier this month.
Mary Underman had a strong 2017 campaign tallying 307 kills, good enough for a 3.16 kills per set, and 26 service aces. She also finished with an impressive .406 attack percentage which surpassed last year's mark of .380 and has her ranked first in the Messiah all-time record books for hitting percentage in a single season. Defensively, Underman was a force in the middle collecting a total of 87 blocks this season. She now has 180 career blocks and that mark has her in seventh in the all-time record books.
Underman becomes the fifth All-American in program history joining her sister
Jane Underman '17,
Brooke Gallagher '17,
Kristen Douglas '17, and assistant coach Lauren (Rees) Bond '12.
