CHANDLER, Ariz. - Longstreth and the National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA) have named Messiah seniors
Carissa Gehman and
Kristin Donohue and junior
Shayna Landis as 2017 All-Americans. The award is Gehman's fourth-straight All-American honor, and first time selected to the First Team. Donohue and Landis received Third Team accolades.
Messiah was one of four schools to receive three honors along with Middlebury, The College of New Jersey, and SUNY Cortland.
Â
This season, the Falcons reached the National Championship game for the second-straight year before falling to Middlebury in the title game. Messiah finished the season 22-1, carrying a program-record 44-game winning streak into this year's championship match.
Â
Gehman had the best season of her illustrious career, tallying career-highs in goals (31), assists (11), points (73), and game-winning goals (11). She set a program single-game record for goals scored in a match on Oct. 7 against Stevenson, notching all five of the Falcons' goals in a 5-1 victory. During a stretch of 10 games during the season, Gehman scored 20 goals, including a goal in each contest. Gehman is just the third field hockey player in Messiah history to earn All-American honors in all four seasons, joining Danae Chambers '05 and Aftan Fisher '06.
Donohue earns her first All-American nod after fantastic play on both ends of the field for the Falcons. The senior led the team with 15 assists, a mark that was tied for third in the nation in total helpers. She also registered six goals including two game-winners, including on the biggest stage as she scored the lone goal of Messiah's NCAA semifinal win over TCNJ.
Landis anchored the defensive end of the field for Messiah, leading a Falcon squad that was second in the country with a goals against average of 0.74 and a shutouts per game mark of 0.57. Messiah held opponents to just 2.9 shots per game in 2017, including five efforts in which the defense did not allow a single shot.
Â
The announcement comes a week after Gehman, Donohue, Landis, and
Nicole Wilkerson were named All-Region by Longstreth and the NFHCA. The final award of the 2017 season, National Player of the Year, will be released next Wednesday, Dec. 13.
