Falcons Fall to Ospreys in Extra Inning Battle

Clermont, FL – The Messiah softball team went 1-1 on the day first defeating FDU-Florham 2-0, but then fell to Stockton University in extra innings 4-3. Amanda Jones went 3-6 on the day with a run scored and Amber Bingaman finished 2-4 and scored a run. Samantha Fouracre (2-0) earned the win I the first game, Madelyn Yannetti (3-1) picked up her first loss of the season.
 
The Falcons are now 6-2 overall and play two more games tomorrow facing Bethel University at 6:00 p.m. and then finish the night with a game against Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute at 8:30 p.m.
 
Game One – Messiah 2, FDU 0
Messiah tacked on a run early in the first inning, Samantha Esper started things off with a single to left center, and then she stole second. Amanda Jones walked and Esper advanced to third on a wild pitch. Erin Cressman stepped up to the plate delivering one-out sacrifice fly to right field which scored Esper giving the Falcons a 1-0 lead.
 
In the bottom of the second, Amber Bingaman singled to right field and advanced to second on an error to start things off. McKenzie Tebbs laid down a bunt and reached on an error by the catcher, with Bingaman scoring on the play putting the Falcons up 2-0. Messiah was unable to push more across in the inning stranding two runners on base.
 
The Falcons had opportunity to score in the fifth inning when Erin Cressman, Sydney Boreman, and Bingaman all drew two out walks, but the bases were left loaded as Tebbs popped up to the shortstop to end the inning.
 
After being retired in order in the sixth, Madelyn Yannetti finished things off in the seventh for Messiah to end the game.
 
Game Two – Messiah 3, Stockton 4
After a scoreless first inning, Erin Cressman started the second inning off with a single down the right field line. She was advanced to second on a SAC bunt by Sydney Boreman, and reached third base due to a throwing error. Amber Bingaman and McKenzie Tebbs were both retired leaving Cressman stranded at third.
 
In the fourth inning Amanda Jones hit a one-out single through the left side, Erin Cressman grounded out to second base, Jones advanced to second on the play and then stole third. Sydney Boreman walked, which brought Amber Bingaman to the plate who, reached on an error by third base with Jones crossing the plate to put Messiah up 1-0.
 
The score would remain 1-0 until the bottom of the sixth when Stockton scored two runs off two hits to take a 2-1 lead. Down to their last chance, the Falcons responded and with runners at first and second, Hayley Anders hit a single to right field. Ashley Carroll scored from second on a throwing error by the right fielder to tie the game up at two.
 
Stockton had their chance in the seventh with runners at first and second but the Messiah defense managed to get out of the inning unscathed forcing the game into extra innings.
 
The international tie-breaker rule was in effect and Emily Quatrale was placed on second base to start off the eighth inning. Carrie Fix stepped up and delivered a single to right field that scored Quatrale to give the Falcons a 3-2 advantage. Fix tried to advance on the play but was thrown out and then Samantha Esper grounded out to second.
 
Amanda Jones ripped a ground-rule double down the left field line but Erin Cressman lined out to second base stranding Jones at second. Heading into the bottom of the eighth, Madelyn Yannetti entered to pitch for the Falcons. With a runner starting on second, the first batter for Stockton walked and the runners advanced on a ground out to first base.
 
The next batter for the Ospreys singled to load the bases. Alexandra Consenzo delivered a RBI single for Stockton to tie the game 3-3. Yannetti retired the next batter for the second out, but then Alexa Massa hit a single through the left side to score a run and giving the Ospreys the 4-3 victory.
