Hilton Head Island, SC – The Falcons traveled to South Carolina to compete in four tennis matches over spring break. Messiah will take on Greenville College, Gordon College, East Texas Baptist University, and will wrap up up on Thursday when they face Nazareth College.
Monday, March 13 - Messiah College 3, Greenville College 0 | Results
The women's tennis team had a strong start to their spring break matches in South Carolina on Monday. Due to rainfall, the singles matches will be completed on Tuesday, March 14. The Falcons' doubles showed very well in their opening match against Greenville College and swept the Panthers 3-0.
Kelly Hopkins and
Sydney Schandel defeated Greenville 8-5,
Carly Dove and
Amanda Adams collected an 8-2 decision over the Panthers, and
Meagan Scala and
Emily Wichert were also victorious by defeating their opponents 8-5.
Messiah will compete against Gordon College at 1:15 p.m. on Tuesday, March 14. They will also look to finish their singles matches against Greenville College on Tuesday evening at 6:00 p.m.
Tuesday, March 14 - Gordon College 6, Messiah College 0 | Results
The Falcons dropped all six matches to a very talented Gordon College squad on Tuesday afternoon. In doubles competition, the Scots defeated the Falcons 8-4 in all three match-ups.
Unfortunately, due to rain only the top three single flights were able to compete.
Kelly Hopkins and
Carly Dove both competed in third-set tiebreakers but were unable to come out victorious. Hopkins was defeated in the first set 6-4 and then came back and won the second set 6-4. The tiebreaker included a lot of back and forth action and Hopkins was defeated 13-11 by Justine Hanson.
Carly Dove came out strong for Messiah and won the first set 6-4 but then was defeated in the second set (6-0) and in the tiebreaker (10-6).
Sydney Schandel was the other player to complete in singles competition and she was defeated 6-3, 6-4.
The Falcons will step back on the court at 8:15 a.m. on Wednesday, March 15 when they take on East Texas Baptist University.
Wednesday, March 15 - East Texas Baptist University 9, Messiah College 0 | Results
The Messiah women's tennis team was unable to pick up a win against a tough East Texas Baptist University team. The Tigers swept the Falcons 9-0 on Wednesday morning.
In doubles play,
Emily Wichert and
Meagan Scala had the best showing against ETBU, but they were defeated by a score of 8-4. On the singles side of things,
Emily Wichert dropped the first set 6-2 and battled her way back into the second set, but couldn't hold on and suffered a 7-5 defeat. Overall, ETBU had a dominating performance over the Falcons.
Messiah will be back in action at 12:30 p.m. against Nazareth College on Thursday, March 16 for their final spring break match-up.
Thursday, March 16 - Messiah College 5, Nazareth College 4 | Results
The Falcons finished the week in Hilton Head picking up a 5-4 over the Nazareth College Golden Flyers.
Messiah defeated the Golden Flyers in doubles action 2-1.
Kelly Hopkins and
Carly Dove had a successful afternoon winning their set 8-5, while
Sydney Schandel and
Amanda Adams came away with a 8-4 victory.
Meagan Scala and
Emily Wichert dropped a close set, 8-6 to Nazareth.
The Falcons and Golden Flyers matched up well in singles action and split the matches 3-3.
Sydney Schandel dropped her first set 5-7, but came back and swept the second set 6-0 and the tie breaker set 10-0.
Emily Wichert also lost her initial set 3-6 but turned things around in the second set and won 6-3. In a close tiebreaker set, Wichert pulled out a 10-7 win.
Amanda Adams was the third Falcons to win in singles competition and only lost one game. Adams dominated her opponent 6-0,6-1.
The Falcons will return to the court on March 23 against King's College in Wilkes-Barre, PA at 3:00 p.m.
