Ft. Pierce, FL - Gettysburg scored multiple runs in both the first and third innings and built an early 5-0 lead en route to a 10-5 win over Messiah to open Spring Break play on Monday in the Florida sunshine. Sam Stewart and Colin Fry each went 3-4 and Stewart collected three RBI.

Quinton Kuntz got the start and took the loss after going just two innings and allowing five runs (four earned). Four pitchers appeared in relief, including Chase Peiffer who allowed four earned runs across two innings. The Bullets' momentum-grabbing moment came in the fifth inning when rallied with two outs and the bases empty to score three runs. A walk was backed up by four-straight run-scoring singles, with the third out coming on Austin Pletcher's throw from rightfield to home plate. Despite getting the out, Gettysburg's rally increased their lead to 8-1.

The Falcons did score two runs in each the fifth and sixth innings, but the deficit was too big to overcome in the loss.

Game 2 - Kenyon 7, Messiah 6

Kenyon College scored four runs in the top of the ninth, coming from behind to defeat Messiah by a final score of 7-6 on Tuesday afternoon.

Messiah and Kenyon each recorded 11 hits, including four hits for the Falcons from third baseman Colin Fry. Fry also tallied two RBI, and Josh Hayner was strong at the plate as well with two hits and two RBI. Brandon Shirk started the game for the Falcons and came away with a no-decision, going five innings and giving up three runs, all earned, on five hits with seven strikeouts and two walks. The trio of Ethan Hess, Matt Wright, and Drew Betz clamped down on the Kenyon batters between the sixth and eighth innings, allowing just one hit during the three-inning stretch in relief. However, Betz was saddled with the loss after allowing four runs on five hits in the ninth.

Hayner put the Falcons up 4-3 with a clutch two-out, two-RBI single in the bottom of the fifth, and Messiah tacked on two more runs in the sixth and eighth innings to take a 6-3 lead into the top of the ninth. The Lords managed to escape with the come-from-behind victory, though, tallying four runs on four singles and a triple before the Falcons went down in order in the bottom of the ninth.

The Falcons continue their sunny spring break trip in Port St. Lucie as they begin conference play against Albright College with a doubleheader Thursday afternoon. Game one is slated to begin at 4:00 p.m.

Game 3 - Messiah 5, Albright 3

John Griffitts went six strong innings and earned the win for Messiah in game one of a double-header against Albright.

After falling behind to the Lions 2-1 through five innings, the Falcons put four runs on the board in the top of the sixth. Adam Janney, Hunter Brindle, and Kyle Wickenheiser each recorded RBIs in the big inning. Albright managed a run in the bottom of the inning, but then Drew Betz came in and earned the save in the seven-inning affair.

Dan Wiederrecht and Austin Mellinger tallied two hits apiece in the winning effort.

Game 4 - Albright 5, Messiah 4

Jordan Nichols started and went five innings for Messiah, and was in line for the win before three errors late in the game opened up a rally for the Lions. The Falcons finished with five total errors, which resulted in allowing four unearned runs.

Messiah scored two in the third on a Colin Fry RBI single and a wild pitch that scored Dan Wiederrecht, and then tacked on two more in the top of the sixth with an Adam Janney RBI triple followed by an RBI groundout from Hunter Brindle to make it 4-0. The Lions scored four in the bottom of the inning, and walked the game off in the bottom of the seventh on an error by catcher Sam Stewart.

The Falcons only mustered five hits, equal to the number of miscues.

Game 5 - Albright 4, Messiah 2
Box Score

Quinton Kuntz went five shutout innings and struck out 10 in a strong showing, but Messiah's bullpen allowed two runs in each the seventh and eighth innings as the Lions rallied to win the three-game set with the Falcons.

It was a classic pitcher's duel, as Kuntz and Ethan Hess combined for seven scoreless innings and 12 strikeouts while Albright's Connor Travis went seven innings and gave up one run on four hits with seven strikeouts. His only blemish came in the bottom of the first inning when Colin Fry hit a sacrifice fly to center field that scored Jon Mullin. Seven innings later, with the Falcons still up 1-0 in the top of the eighth, Hess ran into trouble when he walked the leadoff batter and then after a strikeout, hit another batter with a pitch to set up Noah Beebe with a go-ahead two-run double.

Messiah went down 1-2-3 in the bottom of the inning and the Lions tacked on two more insurance runs, both unearned, in the top of the ninth to take a 4-1 lead. Down to their last chance, the Falcons loaded the bases before Kyle Schoen reached on an error by the third baseman that scored Sam Stewart. Still with the bases loaded and nobody out, Austin Pletcher struck out, Josh Hayner popped out to first base, and Kyle Wickenheiser popped out to second base to end the threat and the game. With the 4-2 win, Albright earned a 2-1 series win over the Falcons to open conference play.
