Brandon Shirk pitched 6 2/3 innings of shutout ball, but Penn State-Harrisburg scored a run in the bottom of the ninth to tie it before walking off in the 10th inning to defeat Messiah baseball 2-1.
The Falcons were outhit by the Lions 10-7, and both teams had trouble pushing runs across, as Messiah left six on base and PSU-Harrisburg left 10 stranded. Both teams committed two errors, but both that were costly were on the Falcon side.
Shirk's final line included six hits, three walks, and four strikeouts.
Glenn Petraitis pitched a scoreless inning of relief in his second appearance of the year.
Mark Lauria and
Jon Mullin were each 2-4 for Messiah, and
Colin Fry extended his hitting streak to seven games and on-base streak to 30 games, dating back to last season.
Messiah's lone run came in the fifth, as
Mark Lauria and
Ryan Adamus hit back-to-back doubles, with Adamus picking up the RBI.
Chase Peiffer came in for the save in the bottom of the ninth, and the Lions immediately loaded the bases with no outs on an error and two singles. Peiffer managed to strike out the next batter, but Chris Iocca reached on an error by shortstop JJ Robinson that scored a run to tie the game and send it to extras.
Jon Mullin singled with two outs in the top of the tenth, but was left stranded. Peiffer came back out to pitch the bottom of the inning, and after a single and sacrifice bunt, Travis VanHo doubled home the winning run for PSU-Harrisburg.
The loss drops the Falcons to 9-15 on the year. They return home for MAC Commonwealth action on Thursday, hosting Hood College for a single game at 3:30 p.m.
