Explosive Offense Helps Falcons Sweep Bullets

Gettysburg, PA – The No. 9 Messiah softball team swept Gettysburg College today winning 8-1 in the first game and 9-6 in the second game. Sydney Boreman went 3-5 with two RBI's and two runs scored, Erin Cressman was 4-8 with four RBI's, and Amanda Jones was 5-9 with four RBI's. Amber Bingaman was solid at the plate in game two going 4-4 with three RBI's and a run scored while Amanda Petersen, Emily Quatrale, and Shannon Denny all had two hits in the nightcap.
 
Fix (13-2) picked up the win after throwing six innings and giving up just four hits and striking out three. Jaelynn Harbold (1-0) earned her first collegiate win in game two and Samantha Fouracre picked up her second save of the year.
 
The Falcons improve to 31-6 on the year are back on the field this Saturday when they travel to Stevenson University for their regular season finale. Game time is set for 1:00 p.m.


Game One: Messiah 8, Gettysburg 1
Defense and pitching controlled the firs three innings as neither team had any opportunities to push runs across. The Falcons busted it open in the fourth inning scoring four runs off five hits and one error by the Bullets.
 
With one out, Erin Cressman drew a walk to get things going for Messiah and then Amber Bingaman singled to left field. McKenzie Tebbs stepped up to the plate with runners at first and second and hit a single to left single to score Cressman. Ashley Carroll then reached on an error and Bingaman tried to score from second on the play but was gunned down at home by the right fielder.
 
The rally kept going for the Falcons with two outs when Sydney Boreman hit a big single to right center scoring both Tebbs and Carroll. Shannon Denny then reached by way of a hit by pitch and Carrie Fix hit a two RBI double to right field giving Messiah a 5-0 lead.
 
The Bullets got one run back in the bottom of the fourth when Jamie Abell hit a home run to left center but Carrie Fix stayed composed on the mound and did not give up any more runs the rest of the game.
 
Messiah added three more runs in the top of the sixth inning and all were scored with two outs. After two hard line shots were grabbed by Gettysburg's first baseman, Sydney Boreman singled to center field. Denny then singled to shortstop with Boreman advancing to second on the play. Carrie Fix was then hit by a pitch to load the bases and Amanda Petersen, who entered as a pinch-hitter, drew a walk for the RBI.
 
Amanda Jones hit a single up the middle to score Denny and Fix and extend the Falcon lead 8-1. Defensively the Falcons made quick work of the Bullets the rest of the game and went on to take game one.

Game Two: Messiah 9, Gettysburg 6
Gettysburg pushed a run across early in the first inning when Messiah made a couple of throwing errors. The Falcons responded, however, and scored three runs in the top of the second inning to take the lead 3-1.
 
Erin Cressman started the inning off with a double to left center and then scored on a single by Amber Bingaman. Amanda Petersen hit a single of the middle to score Bingaman and the Angie Stephano laid down a sacrifice bunt to advance Petersen to second base. Emily Quatrale stepped up and delivered a single up the middle to extend the Falcons lead 3-1.
 
In the top of the third inning Messiah had an opportunity to score with the bases loaded but the Bullets' defense held the Falcons at bay as they left three runners on base. In the bottom of the fourth inning Gettysburg's offense came alive and the scored two runs off four hits to tie the game at three. They then added another run in the fifth inning to regain the lead 4-3.
 
The Falcons kept battling, however, and busted it open with four runs in the sixth inning. Emily Quatrale reached on an error and Ashley Carroll entered to pinch run and she stole second base. Shannon Denny singled on a bunt with Carroll advancing to third on the play. After Gettysburg recorded the first out, Samantha Esper reached on a bunt single and then Amanda Jones reached on a fielder's choice as Denny was thrown out at home for the second out of the inning.
 
Erin Cressman then stepped up big hitting a single to left center to score Carrie Fix and Esper. Amber Bingaman then singled to the pitcher and both Cressman and Jones scored on the play. The Falcons scored four runs off four hits and two errors to lead 7-4 after five and half innings played.
 
In the top of the seventh Messiah added a couple of insurance runs when Amanda Jones hit a singled up the middle to score Fix and Esper who reached base earlier in the inning. Gettysburg put forth a threat in their half of the inning scoring two runs off two hits and two Messiah errors. After entering the game in relief for Jaelynn Harbold in the sixth inning, Samantha Fouracre finished the game strong earning the final out on a strikeout and ending Gettysburg's run.
