Chester, PA - The women's tennis team locked in the second seed for the MAC Commonwealth tournament after defeated the Alvernia Crusaders 6-3 on Saturday. The Falcons will turn around and host Alvernia (No. 3 seed) on Wednesday. Messiah had a great spring season and finished 9-7 overall and 6-1 in the MAC Commonwealth. Their only conference loss was Lebanon Valley who is the number one seed for the conference tournament.
The Falcons swept the Crusaders in doubles action 3-0.
Kelly Hopkins and
Carly Dove (No. 1 doubles) had a close match but held on for the 8-6 victory. Sydney Shandel and
Amanda Adams battled hard and picked up an 8-5 win, while
Meagan Scala and
Emily Wichert collected an 8-3 victory over their opponents.Â
Messiah and Alvernia split in singles play, each winning three matches.
Sydney Schandel won a three-setter (7-6 (7-4), 1-6, 6-0) for the Falcons and
Emily Wichert also picked up a 6-2, 6-1 victory.
Amanda Adams dominated her opponent and only gave up one game (6-1, 6-0).
Kelly Hopkins (4-6,6-2,6-2),
Carly Dove (6-4, 7-5), and Meagan Scale (6-2,6-3) fell to their opponents in singles play.
The Falcons will host Alvernia on Wednesday, May 3 in the MAC Commonwealth semifinal.
