Grantham, PA - Messiah baseball took a 6-1 lead into the seventh inning, but allowed 13 runs over the final three innings to fall to Widener University 14-6 on Monday afternoon.
Â
Quinton Kuntz started for the Falcons and pitched very well, going five innings and giving up just the one run on six hits while striking out four. However, he had to leave the game just two pitches into the sixth with an apparent injury.
Ben Wilson was impressive at the plate, going 2-4 with two home runs and four RBI.
Colin Fry also went 4-5 with two runs scored and an RBI.
Â
Colin Fry got the Falcons on the board early with an RBI single after
Dan Wiederrecht walked and stole both second and third.
Â
Wilson hit the first of his two homers in the bottom of the third inning. Fry singled to left, and Wilson proceeded to launch a shot well over the fence in left field to put the Falcons up 3-0.
Dan Wiederrecht just missed hitting a two-run homer of his own in the fourth, as with
Jon Mullin aboard, he cranked an RBI double of the fence in deep center field. The Falcons scored in four of the first five innings, culminating with another two-run blast from Wilson, this time to left-center to put Messiah up 6-1.
Â
As mentioned, Kuntz went a very strong five innings, but had to be pulled during the first at-bat of the sixth.
Drew Betz came in and retired the side to hold the five-run lead.
Â
However, the wheels began to fall off in the top of the seventh. After a groundout began the inning, the next eight batters reached base, including three Falcon errors and a hit-by-pitch, to score five runs and tie the game at six. After a 1-2-3 inning for Messiah at the plate, Widener pushed five more runs across in the top of the eighth. They would tack on three more on a homer by Nick Enos in the ninth before the scoring onslaught was finished.
Â
The Falcons only managed one hit over the last four innings, and fell by a final score of 14-6.
Â
The Falcons travel to York College tomorrow afternoon for a 3:30 start.
