Grantham, PA - Ten minutes before sundown, Emily Wichert defeated her opponent (7-5) in a tie-break set to collect Messiah's fifth victory of the evening. Messiah defeated Alvernia 5-1 in the MAC Commonwealth semifinal and advance to the championship match against No.1 seed Lebanon Valley.

The Falcons came out strong, sweeping Alvernia in doubles play, 3-0. Kelly Hopkins and Carly Dove defeated their opponents 8-3, and Meagan Scala and Emily Wichert dominated and won 8-2. Sydney Schandel and Amanda Adams (No. 2 doubles) came from behind and won 9-7 in a hard fought battle.

Since Messiah swept doubles play, they only needed two wins in singles action to advance. Amanda Adams picked up the Falcons first victory by winning both sets fairly easily (6-0, 6-2). Meagan Scala was the second match to finish, but she fell to Arcadia's Emily Thek, 6-3, 6-2. Emily Wichert won her first set 6-2 but her opponent battled back. Wichert was down 4-5 in the second set and fought back (6-6) to get to a tie-breaker set. The tie-breaker was neck and neck, but Wichert pulled away with some aggressive serves and won 7-5. Emily Wichert was the fifth and final victory that Messiah needed to make a back-to-back trip to the conference final.

The Falcons will look to capture their second-straight MAC Commonwealth title when they travel to Lebanon Valley College on Saturday. Check GoMessiah.com for further updates.
