Grantham, PA - After a weekend of overcast skies and rain, the sun finally came out just as Messiah men's tennis wrapped up their fourth-straight MAC Commonwealth Championship, defeating Lebanon Valley College 5-1. The Falcons went 2-1 in doubles matches, and won the first three decisions in singles to secure the victory.
Messiah's No. 1 and No. 2 doubles pairings continued their dominant success this season, taking the first two decisions with ease.
Tim Dunn and Conner Graybeal improved to 16-4 on the year with an 8-2 victory, while
Devin Esch and
Austin Warren won 8-1 to bring their season mark to 16-3. No. 3 doubles was a close, exciting match, but
Blake Ross and
Alex Mantsevich could not pull it out, falling 8-6.
Esch (No. 3 singles) knocked off Brent Greco in straight sets, 6-3 and 6-1, in the first singles match to conclude on the afternoon. Dunn (No. 1) followed with a 6-2, 6-1 victory over Nick Jones to bring the Falcons within one win of the title. Messiah did not have to wait for very long, as
Austin Warren played a phenomenal match, defeating Reed Morris of LVC 6-1, 6-2 to secure the championship.
Warren, a senior, was named the MAC Commonwealth Tournament Most Valuable Player for his outstanding effort on the court.
The Falcons await their placement in the NCAA Championships Tournament, with the selections being released by the NCAA tomorrow.
