DALLAS, Pa. –
Brooke Firestone and
Emily D'Amico scored second-half goals to help No. 12 Messiah earn a hard-fought 2-0 win on the road at Misercorida on Saturday night. The win pushed Messiah to 6-1-2 overall while the Cougars fell to 5-2-2.
Through the Midfield
Messiah and Misericordia—familiar rivals on opposite sides of the Middle Atlantic Conference—contested the match in the midfield for long stretches. In the first-half the Falcons held a narrow edge in shots (8-6) but the Cougars put more on frame (3-2).
It wasn't until the end of the first-half that the Falcons were able to hold territory for longer stretches, and that led to better opportunities after the break.
Heating Up
Brooke Firestone's tally in the 50' came off a feed from
Abby Monko, and it proved to the game-winner in the Falcons' shutout. The score for Firestone's second in as many games, and Monko's helper was both her third on the season and her seventh point in Messiah's past four matches.
Breathing Room
Messiah's 1-0 lead was doubled in the 62' thanks to a strong finish from
Emily D'Amico. She made good on a corner serve from
Maddie Kohl, and the score gave Messiah a bit of breathing room against a Cougar offense that had yet to be shutout in 2017.
Up Next
Messiah will remain on the road for their next match on Sept. 27 at Dickinson. Game time is set for 5:00 p.m.
