READING, Pa. - No. 2 Messiah women's soccer held the Alvernia Golden Wolves without a shot as they claimed a 2-0 victory on Saturday evening to improve to 12-1-0 on the season and 5-0-0 in the MAC Commonwealth.
Lilly Shover tallied on a penalty kick in the 39th minute while

As mentioned, Messiah controlled the possession battle attempting 27 shots in the match while holding Alvernia without a shot. The Falcons put 13 shots on goal, forcing Alvernia's Lily Sankey to make 11 saves in the match.
Early Pressure
The Falcons started Saturday night's game with a dozen shots in the first 37 minutes of the match, but were held off the board until the 39th minute.
Lilly Shover tallied the first Falcons' goal with a penalty kick in the 39th minute for her first goal of the season. The tally was Shover's fourth career score and came on the first penalty kick of her career.
Late in the half it looked like the Falcons were going to double the lead, but a shot from
Megan Mansfield ripped a shot off the post before it was cleared away in the 45th minute to keep it a 1-0 Messiah lead heading to the half.
Adding Insurance
That 1-0 Falcons' lead remained just after the midpoint of the second-half, when
Megan Mansfield found the back of the net off a cross from
Sunny Gelnovatch. In the 69th minute, Gelnovatch carried the ball into the right corner before sending a centering pass to Mansfield who dribbled forward before beating the keeper for her fifth goal of the season.
Messiah looked to add a third goal late with shots from
Sarah Strachan,
Ashley Sauder (two), and
Maddie Kohl, but Messiah was unable to capitalize on their chances and finished the match with the 2-0 victory.
What's Up Next
With the victory, Messiah moves to 12-1-0 overall and now holds a 5-0-0 record in the MAC Commonwealth. The Falcons will next take the field on Tuesday night when they host the Lycoming Warriors (1-13 overall, 0-4 conference) at 7:00 p.m. at Shoemaker Field.
