Singles Bracket | Doubles Bracket
WILKES-BARRE, Pa. - A handful of members from the Messiah men's tennis team competed in the Middle Atlantic Conference Individual Champions this weekend in both singles and doubles competition. Following Day One of competition, the Falcons had three individuals still alive in the singles competition and a pair of teams in doubles.
Keller Martin earned the highest finish in singles play for Messiah, finishing in the semifinals of the No. 4 singles bracket.
Saturday, Oct. 13 Update
Messiah moved three of their six representatives in singles play onto Sunday after strong showings in the First Round of play in the MAC Championships. The Championships are broken down into seven singles flights with each team able to submit one player in each flight. The Falcons were represented in each of the first six singles flights.
Andrew Bookman earned a 6-1, 6-4 victory over Hood's Jorden Hahn in the First Round of the No. 2 singles flight to advance to Sunday's Second Round. In No. 4 singles,
Keller Martin claimed a 6-2, 6-4 victory over DeSales Austin Wesch to also move into Sunday's Quarterfinals.
Jarod Snader also moved into the Quarterfinals after being scheduled to play Nick Meek from Lycoming, but earned a walkover through the First Round.
In the top flight,
Alex Mantsevich dropped a tight, 2-6, 6-3, 12-10 decision to Arcadia's Nicholas Simeone in the opening round.
AJ Swanson also dropped a tough match tiebreak by a 1-6, 6-3, 10-4 in the First Round against Manhattanville's Dylan Crowley.
No. 6 singles finished two rounds of their bracket with
Cody Fitzwater claiming a 6-4, 4-6, 10-5 victory over Jamie Paredo (Manhattanville) in the First Round before falling to the two-seed Larry Johnson (Stevenson) 6-0, 6-2 to halt his tournament run.
In doubles play, Bookman and Martin combined to play in the top doubles flight. Following an 8-6 victory over a second-seeded Stevenson team in the First Round, Bookman and Martin took out the FDU-Florham team 8-3. The duo remains alive as competition turns to the semifinals on Sunday.
In addition to Bookman/Martin the doubles team of
Alex Mantsevich and
Jarod Snader is still alive in the No. 2 doubles bracket. They earned an 8-4 victory in the First Round over a team from Albright before topping a team from Arcadia by a score of 8-3.
Play in the MAC Individual Championships will conclude Sunday in Wilkes-Barre, Pa. on the campuses of Wilkes and King's.
Sunday, Oct. 14 Update
Keller Martin highlighted the Individual Championships for the Falcons finishing in the semifinals of the No. 4 singles. On Sunday, Martin earned a 6-4, 6-4 victory over Worndern Ly, the second-seeded player in the flight from Stevenson in the quarterfinals before dropping a hard-fought match against JT Murray from FDU-Florham, 6-4, 1-6, 10-6 in the semifinals.
In the No. 2 singles flight,
Andrew Bookman fell to the top-seeded Jonathan White (Wilkes), 6-1, 6-1, ending his tournament run in the quarterfinals.
Jarod Snader also competed in singles play on Sunday, falling to the third-seeded Drew Ryan from Stevenson in the quarterfinals by a 7-5, 6-1 final.
In doubles play, the Messiah team of Bookman and Martin finished in the semifinals on the No. 1 bracket, falling to the King's team of Millan/Mackey by an 8-5 final. In the No. 2 doubles bracket,
Alex Mantsevich and
Jarod Snader advanced to the semifinals on Sunday, but fell 8-4 to the eventual champions from Wilkes.
The Falcons will now take a break for the winter and will be back in action in mid-March during their spring break trip.
