Grantham, PA - No. 3 Messiah women's soccer controlled the pace of play against the Albright Lions en route to a 2-0 victory on Shoemaker Field. Messiah scored a goal in each half with
Jessie Fisher tallying in the 38th minute and
Barb Foster netting a tally in the 86th minute.
Messiah held possession for a vast majority of the match, attempting 37 shots against just one for the Lions.
With the victory, Messiah advances to 10-1-0 overall and 3-0-0 in the MAC Commonwealth. The Falcons are next in action on Wednesday night when they travel to the Lebanon Valley Dutchmen on Wednesday afternoon at 4:00 p.m.
Taking the Lead
The Falcons controlled the pace of play right from the get go with three shots and a pair of corner kicks in the first 10 minutes of action. Messiah continued to pressure the Albright defense over the course of the next 25 minutes with 12 more shots, putting a half dozen attempts on frame.
In the 38th minute, the Falcons found their moment in the opening half when
Emily D'Amico sent a pass from the left corner to
Jessie Fisher just above the box. Fisher quickly turned to her right and ripped a shot that tucked inside the right-post for the first goal of the contest. The score was the fourth of the season for Fisher after the freshman netted a hat trick against Hood in the Falcons' last home match.
Less than a minute after the Falcons took the 1-0 lead, Albright attempted their only shot of the match in the 39th minute when Lauren Haley sent a shot wide of the left post. Haley's shot is the only shot that Messiah has allowed to a MAC Commonwealth foe so far this season (three matches).
Holding Possession
Messiah took the 1-0 lead into the half and after the quick break between periods, the Falcons picked up right where they left off. Messiah continued to win the territory battle throughout the second-half, earning five corner kicks and attempting 16 shots before adding an insurance goal at the end of the match.
Adding Insurance
In the 86th minute with the Falcons still holding a one-goal advantage,
Jessie Fisher sent a corner kick into the box. The corner from the left-side found
Barb Foster in the center of the box. The junior defender settled the ball before taking a shot that looked to be initially stopped by a defender on the goal-line, but it was ruled that Foster's strike had fully crossed the line for a 2-0 Messiah lead.
Brooke Firestone attempted the only shot in the remaining four-plus minutes, but her attempt was saved by Albright's Alexis Tunney, one of her 14 saves in the match, and Messiah earned the 2-0 victory.
What's Up Next
With the victory, Messiah moves to 10-1-0 overall and bumps their MAC Commonwealth record to 3-0-0. The Falcons have now claimed seven-straight victories and extend their shutout streak to four matches.
Messiah will be in action on Wednesday when they travel to Annville to take on the Lebanon Valley Dutchmen at 4:00 p.m. Through nine matches the Dutchmen are 5-3-1 overall and 1-1-0 in the conference and will be well rested after having a bye this weekend – last match Tuesday, Oct. 2, 2-0 win vs. Alvernia.
