Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Late Rally Falls Short Against Bobcats in Greensburg

GREENSBURG, Pa. - Following a jumper from the Bobcats' Cam Sigfried with 4:09 remaining in the second-half, Messiah men's basketball trailed the Pittsburg - Greenburg 67-56. Messiah proceeded to go on a 15-6 run over the next 3:51 to cut the lead down to just a bucket at 73-71 thanks to seven points from Matt Glogowski and six from Colin Sareyka. Unfortunately for the Falcons, the late run fell just short as the Bobcats held on for the 74-71 victory on their home floor.

Glogowski and Zach McDonough led the scoring effort for the Falcons with 15 points each while Sareyka chimed in with 12 points along with a game-high eight assists.

Messiah moves to 3-3 on the season and will next take the floor after Thanksgiving Break with their MAC Commonwealth opener against the Widener Pride on Nov. 28 in Chester at 6:00 p.m.

Strong Start
Messiah got out to a speedy start with a lay-up from Kyle Krout just four seconds into the game off an assist from Sareyka. That bucket jumpstarted a 10-5 start to the game for the Falcons and Messiah led by five with just over three minutes into the contest.

The game remained close after an 8-0 run from the Bobcats, but it was Messiah holding a 17-13 advantage 9:30 into the match after a layup from Will Young IV.

Hanging Tough
Five-minutes later a three from the Bobcats' David Runco capped off a quick 7-0 run that gave Pitt - Greensburg 30-22 lead with 3:59 remaining in the first-half. Messiah hung tough and put together a strong, 9-1 run over the next 2:12 to tie the game at 31-31 with less than two minutes remaining before the break.

The Bobcats bumped the lead back to five at the break (38-33), before hitting a three on the opening possession of the second-half to bring the lead back to eight at 41-33. The lead eventually grew to 10 points, but just as they did late in the first-half, Messiah fought back and eventually tied the game on a Nate Eberly layup at 51-51 with 12:08 remaining in regulation.

Late Deficit
While the Falcons had tied the game, they were unable to take the lead in the middle portion of the half. The Bobcats hit threes on two of their next three trips down the floor to take the lead back at 57-51 less than a minute after the Falcons tied the game.

Over the next six minutes the Pitt - Greensburg lead ballooned to as many as 11 points at 67-56 following a jumper by the game's leading scorer, Cam Seigfreid (26 points), with 4:09 remaining in the second-half.

Final Push
An and-one layup from Matt Glogowski sparked a Messiah rally that brought the Falcons with two at 73-71. During the 15-6 streak, Messiah went 5-7 from the field and a perfect, 4-4 from the free throw line. In addition to his and-one finish, Glogowski finished another layup and a pair of free throws to lead the scoring effort on the run.

With under a minute to play, Colin Sareyka completed a nifty and-one finish from the right-side and then knocked down a three from the right-wing to pull Messiah within a possession at 73-71.

After the Bobcats missed the frontend of a one-and-one, Messiah tried to take the lead with a three, but the attempt was off the mark and Pitt - Greensburg grabbed the board. The Bobcats went 1-2 from the free throw line and Messiah got the ball back with just three seconds on the clock, trailing 74-71. A last second heavy was not in the cards for the Falcons as their inbounds pass went out of bounds and the Bobcats held on for the three-point victory.

What's up Next
The Falcons will take a little over a week off from competition with the Thanksgiving holiday this week. Messiah will be back in action next Wednesday when they travel to Chester to take on the Widener Pride in their MAC Commonwealth opener at 6:00 p.m. as part of a double-header with the women's team (8:00 p.m. tip-off).
