FORT PIERCE, Fla. - Messiah baseball dropped the opening game of their spring break trip on Monday morning, falling to the University of Scranton 12-6.
Messiah moves to 3-3 on the year, while Scranton improves to 2-2.
Dan Wiederrecht led the Falcons from the plate, going 3-4 with a triple, an RBI, and one run scored.
Josh Hayner also registered a triple, RBI and run scored.
Messiah got on the board first, as
Trent Culver walked to open the bottom of the first inning and scored on a
Nick Godwin double. However, Scranton rallied back with four runs off Messiah starter
Brandon Shirk in the top of the second to take a 4-1 lead. That lead would extend to 6-2 by the after the top of the third frame.
In the bottom of the third, Messiah started a rally with Godwin notching a one-out walk and Wiederrecht legging out a RBI triple.
Sam Stewart followed with an RBI groundout to score Wiederrecht, cutting the deficit to 6-4. The Falcons tied it up at six in the bottom of the fourth, as Hayner knocked an RBI triple and then scored on a sacrifice fly off the bat of
Colin Fry.
However, the Royals scored six unanswered runs over the final five innings to come away with the victory. Scranton reliever Pat Rohr entered in the third and pitched 5.1 innings, giving up just three hits and two runs to earn the win.
The Falcons look to bounce back tomorrow when they face Cairn University at 7:00 p.m.
Tuesday, Mar. 13 - Cairn

FORT PIERCE, Fla. - Messiah baseball led for much of Tuesday night's contest against Cairn University, but the Falcons could not hang on late as the Highlanders scored eight runs across the seventh and eighth innings to grab a come-from-behind 9-6 victory.
Trent Culver led the Falcons with two hits and two RBI in four at-bats, as well as coming in to pitch in the top of the ninth and striking out the side.
Austin Mellinger also had a great night at the plate, going 3-4 with an RBI and two runs scored. After an injury redshirt season last yeat,
Zach Luman came back in his first action since May 7, 2016 to toss a scoreless frame in the sixth, allowing a hit and a walk but getting all three outs via the strikeout.
Luke Luckenbaugh was impressive on the mound as the starter, going five innings and allowing just one run on three hits wih seven strikeouts. However, Luckenbaugh was denied his first collegiate win as Cairn stormed back in the later innings to give the freshman a no-decision.
The Highlanders got on the board first in the top of the second, but the Falcons would rally for six unanswered runs in their next two at-bats to take a 6-1 lead after three. This included a 2-RBI single from Culver and a steal of home by
Ben Wilson in the second, followed by an
Adam Janney RBI single, Mellinger RBI double, and Mellinger scoring on a passed ball in the third.
However, Cairn was able to take advantage of Messiah's mistakes in the seventh and eighth, as the Falcons recorded four errors across the two frames that led to six of the Highlander's eight runs in the comeback being unearned.
Messiah falls to 3-4 on the year, and will now begin their MAC Commonwealth slate, as the Falcons face Hood College in a three-game series over Thursday and Friday.
