GRANTHAM, Pa. - Frostburg State University scored seven of the last eight goals on a cold and windy Wednesday night to race past Messiah men's lacrosse by a final score of 14-10.
The Falcons fall to 2-4 on the year, while the Bobcats improve to 3-4.
Despite the four-goal deficit, Messiah outshot Frostburg 36-33 in the game, but the story was in the shots on goal department, as Frostburg tallied 23 to the Falcons' 18.
Hunter Bellows led the Messiah attack with four goals on eight shots, and
Luke Hall and
Dylan Gillisse notched two scores apiece.
Evan Stoker came up with nine saves in goal for the Falcons.
Gillisse and Bellows got Messiah off to a hot start, each scoring in the first four minutes to give the Falcons a 2-0 lead. However, the Bobcats roared back, scoring three unanswered to take a 3-2 lead with 3:35 remaining in the first period. Bellows decided that he had seen enough and sparked a 4-0 run for Messiah with two more goals.
Joseph Franken and
Luke Hall also tallied over that stretch to give Messiah a 6-3 advantage.
Frostburg came back once again, cutting the deficit to one, 7-6, as time ran out on the opening half.
The Bobcats tied the game at seven just over three minutes into the third quarter, but Hall and Garret Amsbaugh answered with back-to-back scores to put Messiah back on top by two with 4:14 to play in the third. However, Frostburg proceeded to close the game on a 7-1 run, taking face off after face off and not letting the Falcons have the ball on their offensive end for most of the final quarter. Over the final 15 minutes, Frostburg was able to win six of the eight face offs and Messiah only registered four shots.
The Falcons look to bounce back on March 24 when they travel to face Eastern University at 1:00 p.m.
