GRANTHAM, Pa. - Messiah men's lacrosse tallied seven goals in the second-half en route to an 11-6 victory over Widener University on Wednesday night.
Sophomore
Garrett Amsbaugh led the Falcons with three goals and an assist, while
Brandon Witmer,
Liam Lilienthal, and
Joseph Franken all notched a pair of goals for Messiah. Franken also recorded two assists for four total points, tied with Amsbaugh for game-high honors.
Evan Stoker played all 60 minutes in goal, saving 11 Pride attempts to earn the win.
With the win, Messiah improves to a perfect 4-0 in the MAC Commonwealth and 7-4 overall. Widener was also undefeated in conference coming into tonight's game, but now fall to 2-1 in the league and 3-8 on the year.
The Falcons owned the first quarter, as
Hunter Bellows got the scoring started less than four minutes in with a goal off a feed from Witmer to give Messiah an early 1-0 lead. Lilienthal and Franken would each record their first goals of the game before the period was over as the Falcons led 3-0 after the first fifteen minutes of action.
Widener was able to hold their own in the second quarter, notching a pair of goals as they cut Messiah's lead to 4-2 at the halftime break.
After the Pride scored two of the first three goals of the second-half to cut the deficit to 5-4 in favor of the Falcons, Messiah went on a 4-0 run that stretched into the fourth quarter that gave the home team a 9-4 lead with 13:28 to go. Widener was able to win the ensuing faceoff and race straight down the field and score just seven seconds later, but two more goals from
Cory Hurst (first of the season) and Lilienthal would all but seal the deal for Messiah as the Falcons went on to win by the final score of 11-6.
Messiah will now face the last other conference unbeaten team and perennial rival Stevenson University on Saturday. The Falcons will travel to Owings Mills, Md. for a 7:00 p.m. start and will look to defeat the Mustangs for the first time since they joined the MAC Commonwealth in 2013.
