CHESTER, Pa. – The Messiah women's lacrosse team picked up a dominating win over Widener University tonight winning 21-4. McKenna Edwards led the offense with 6 goals while
Abby Howard had four goals, and
Courtney Wagner tallied three. Wagner also notched seven assists, just one shy of the program record. Six other players provided goals in the game and the total of 21 ranks sixth in program history for most goals scored in a game.
Messiah recorded more shots (35-17), triple the shots on goal (32-9), and more ground balls (20-17). They were 21-27 on draw controls as
Kendra Herbenar led with nine and
Audrey Liberati had seven.
The Falcons are now 9-3 on the year and 4-0 in the MAC Commonwealth. They host Stevenson University on Saturday afternoon with the game beginning at 1:00 p.m.
Scoring certainly wasn't an issue for Messiah tonight and they scored the first goal of the game when McKenna Edwards put one in at the 28:14 mark. Widener tied it up a few minutes later but the
Annika Johnsen tallied a goal of a free position shot at the 23:49 mark. The next three goals came rather consecutively as
Eliza Lortie (21:59), Edwards (20:49), and
Abby Howard (2-:26) scored to give the Falcons a 5-1 lead.
Messiah took advantage of a player-down opportunity when
Abby Howard tallied a goal off an assist by Wagner with 17:29 left in the half. The Pride scored the next two goals of the game, however, to cut the lead in half 6-3, and then at the 12:22 mark added another goal to pull within two 6-4. The Falcons responded as Edwards scored her third goal of the game off a free position shot and then just about two minutes later number four found the back of the net.
The Falcons hit double digits when Bishop scored a goal, assisted by Jessica Hatch, and then
Courtney Wagner scored 48 second later to put the team up 10-4. Messiah then finished the half on a 3-0 run and were ahead 13-4 at the break.
It took a little more time in the second half for offense but Messiah when up by 10 at the 21:33 mark as
Michelle Krenzke scored a goal and a minute later Wagner tallied her second of the game. Goals 16 and 17 came from
Abby Howard (16:40) and Wagner (14:41) who was assisted by McKenna Edwards.
Messiah finished the game on a 4-0 run,
Morgan Reifsteck tallied the final goal of the game with 1:34 left the play and the defense allowed Widener just one shot in the final 12 minutes en route to the 21-4 victory.
