GRANTHAM, Pa. - Penn State Harrisburg scored two runs in the top of the tenth to break a 3-3 tie, and Messiah baseball was unable to complete a comeback as the Falcons scored a run in their half of the inning but fell to the Lions 5-4.
Kyle Wickenheiser provided much of the offense for Messiah on the day, going 3-5 with a home run, three RBI, and a run scored. The trio of
Luke Luckenbaugh,
Ben Stewart, and
Matt Wright only gave up three hits on the mound through the ten innings, but eight walks, three hit batters, and three errors put plenty of Lions on base.
Wickenheiser's homer provided the first run of the game in the second inning, as he belted a pitch over the wall in straightaway center field to put Messiah up 1-0.
Dan Wiederrecht followed with a single, and after advancing to third with a steal and on a lineout, scored on a passed ball to double the Falcon advantage.
As the starter for Messiah, Luckenbaugh did not give up a hit in 4 2/3 innings of work, but left the game with two runners on base in the fifth after taking a line drive off his chest in the previous inning. Stewart got out of that two-on, two-out jam by inducing a fly ball to center field. The Lions recorded their first hit of the game with one out in the sixth, and it was a big one as Zachary Koroneos slugged a pitch over the fence in right field and into the tennis courts to tie the game at two.
Messiah took the lead back in the bottom of the inning, as Wickenheiser came through with his second RBI of the day on a single that scored
Trey Pritchard. However, Penn State Harrisburg tied it up again in the top of the seventh, without registering a hit, as there was a hit batsmen, a walk, and a sacrifice fly off the bat of Chris Iocca.
The Falcons loaded the bases with two out in the bottom of the eighth, but were unable to score as
Kyle Schoen struck out swinging. Both sides were retired in order in the ninth, so the game headed to extra innings.
Matt Wright had entered to pitch for Messiah in the seventh, and went back out for the tenth. He hit the first batter and then committed a balk to advance him to second. After a sacrifice bunt moved the runner to third, Jackson Struve came through for the Lions with a pinch-hit, RBI single to left field to give the visitors the lead. Just the second hit of the game for the Lions, Struve's base knock was followed by a single through the left side off the gat of Chase Smith to put two on with one out. A throwing error on an attempted double play would allow another run to score before the inning was over, and Penn State Harrisburg took a 5-3 lead into the bottom of the tenth.
In need of a rally,
Mark Leach started things off well with a single and advanced to second on a
Derek Freed groundout. Down to the final out one batter later, Wickenheiser came through in the clutch again with a single into right field that scored Leach and brought the Falcons within one. Wiederrecht followed with a walk, but Schoen flied out to right field to end the game.
Messiah falls to 11-19 on the season, while Penn State Harrisburg improves to 28-8. The Falcons will now play their seventh game in five days when they host Juniata College in a nonconference matchup tomorrow at 4:00 p.m.
